I don't agree that sympathy or empathy plays any larger role in voting for photos.

I'm not empathetic. Or sympathetic. A photographer chooses to be here out of their own free will. As such I expect them to go out of their way to pay attention to things normal snapshot photographers do not. Focus, lighting, composition, etc... and I expect to get hammered for missing those things myself like I did last week.

I think most photographers here are harda$$es but just don't want ot let on that they are.

Look at the voting record for most of the regular contributors. 5 or lower average vote given. That does not help support the sympathetic vote idea.

If anything, knowledge about what it takes to make an image makes most photographers scrutinize even more carefully.

Things like little cropping errors, hot pixels, catchlight in the eyes, stray reflections, etc, etc, etc, all play to make the photogrpahers a harder crowd to please from a technical standpoint alone.

Add to that the fact that every photographer here will boil you alive if you try to play to the easy target like American flag waving, cute babies, fuzzy rabbits, nudity, or shock.

I decided to test this very theory this week...I am still waiting for that special comment that I know is coming before the weeks end. I hope I am not disappointed :-)

Gordon,

I just checked all my submissions with similar results to yours... Most of mine are not a full point off but the highest difference is 1.34 and the lowest is 0.19, but the photographer vote was higher in each submission....

In all of my pictures the non-photographers voted me typically at least
1 point lower on average, appart from my most ''commercial''
entry which I would say could easily be a postcard.

It isn''t really an opinion and I''m not trying to draw
a conclusion but it is an interesting trend, at least
for my results - not sure if it holds true for all entrants.
