I would like to make wide-angle shots. The lens I really want is the Pentax flavor of Sigma 10-20mm. The thing is it's close to $500.

As an alternative, I am also looking in Zenitar 16mm fish-eye lens which goes for about $160.

My question is how much "wider" of a shot can you get with the Zenitar when compared to a regular kit 18-55 lens (especially considering the crop factor on a DSLR)? In other words, is it even worth getting the Zenitar when I already own Pentax 18-55 lens?

there is a big difference between regular wide angle lenses and fish-eyes. The former are specifically designed to minimize barrel distortions (straight lines remain straight even though their spacing is distorted), and fish-eyes do nothing to compensate barrel distortion, perhaps they even exaggerate it. So it all depends on what kind of effect you are after. And yes, I assume (however I don't own that lens) that 16mm Zenitar will give you a much wider field of view than 18mm regular lens.

100%-16/18 = about 11% wider, regardless of your crop factor. But like LevT mentions, fisheye is something completely different. If you do want fisheye, why not try the Peleng? It is fairly cheap, quality is fine and it is realy wide 8 mm. Not sure whether it's avilable for Pentax though.

I don't think this calculation applies to fisheyes, because of the distortion factor I mentioned before. Depending on the mapping which depends on the optics of a specific lens, even a 16mm lens can give you 180deg field of view (apparently Zenitar does on a full 35mm frame, even though it would cover only about 100deg if it was a regular wide angle lens).
