My sister is looking for a little camera she can take with her on our trip to Italy this June. Anyone have any suggestions for something $300 or less?
Thanks!! |

I love my Canon Digital Elph. I have the SD700is. It's discontinued, but I take a look at what they have to offer now.

| or the Fuji F30. For low light, control and image quality - bigger sensor than other compacts. You can get cheaper, smaller cameras that are adequate, it depends on what your sis is into. I have the very cheap Nikon Coolpix L10, for backup/don't care/carry everywhere. Or at higher end, the Ricohs and Pannies offer greater Zooms (Pannies have the lenses) though neither is good at low light. But Italy will be sunny? |

Unless the noise level has been improved in the Lumix, I would recommend staying away from it. I sold mine because I found it to be a very poor camera in that arena.

Yeah, I was just reading that on dpreview... Is there a camera with 5+ optical zoom and better image quality? |

I don't think the noise is objectionable for amateur P&Sers who make nothing larger than 8x10 prints, and rarely those,. By OUR standards it's a little weak on noise, but we are VERY picky.

True, my sister would rather a pretty camera than one that works well, LOL. I think the extra noise might be worth it for the extra zoom, depending on how much there is. I'm gonna see if I can find one to test out.

I'm not very picky, but visible noise in a print at ISO 100 just didn't suit me well at all.

Have you seen this? Olympus SP-550 UZ
ISO 5000
18x optical zoom
f2.8
15fps
Unfortunately, I think it's not quite pretty enough for my sister...
AND dpreview doesn't recommend it.

The Finepix f30/f31 and Lumix TZ3 are both very good choices. Normally, I'd lean toward the Fuji, but I remember on my trip to Italy being disappointed that I didn't have either a really wide angle lens or more zoom. The Lumix wins on both counts.
If she's primarily going to shoot outdoors, go with the Lumix. If the shots will be mostly indoors or portraits, get the Fuji. They're both great cameras at great prices. At $259, this would be another good choice.
