I have the earlier model D ED version of the 70/300 Nikkor, and it seems to be a very good lens in sharpness, contrast and build. I can't vouch for the G VR ED model, but the D ED has excellent optics. The only thing that I do not like about the D model is that the end of the lens turns when it is focusing, making it difficult to use with a polarizer. I also have the 70/300 G non ED, which has the same rotation when focusing.
I see that the one you are looking at is an IF model, so that will not be a problem, as the IF models do not rotate the front of the lens when focusing.
That is an excellent zoom range for wild game ect, and should work well, even early or late in the day with the VR feature to allow longer shutter times.

I have never used this lens, But I have looked at in the store it is built pretty good.

I have also seen others give it pretty decent plugs in the forums here. MAK had one before he switched to Canon aka Sex Change. In fact he just helped sway another member here into purchasing the 70-300 vr about a week ago.

It is really sharp and contrasty from 70-180ish, and at 70mm it is as sharp as it gets. @ 300mm the corners are quite soft wide open until you stop down to f8 (that actually helps with some subjects). Distortion is quite low throughout the whole range and is a non issue unless your primarily shooting architecture. It focuses really fast in good light and the VR really does allow 2 stop slower shutter speeds than WO it. The actual construction is quite good for consumer lens standards. The only real negative is that the lens is IMO it is about $100 overpriced, or Nikon should have built the barrel like the 80-400 and charged even more.

Not good examples, but the only photos I currently have in my DPC portfoilo that use it...

okay I'm sold lol. I haven't even been able to get a duck that sharp being somewhat close with my 45-150.

And people keep asking why I'm changing cameras. If I wanted to buy the same type of lens from Olympus I'm looking at 300 to 400 more and then some.

Here are a few of the users from this site who got some good photos with that lens.
