EDIT:
I now have split the signal using a satellite splitter. One line going in to tuner 1 input and the other going in to tuner 2 on the back of the DVR. I checked the signal in the DTV setup screen and both 1 and 2 are at 97%.
Now...I can view all channels. However, when I hit "record" ...it starts to record the channel that I am on. When I hit the "up" on the remote to go to the next channel... I don't get the channel. It says "searching for satellite on tuner 2".
If I hit the remote again to go up one more channel...I get the channel...while recording the other !!!! However, when I go up one more channel it says "searching for satellite on tuner 2"...
So...when I'm recording, I can only watch every other channel!!!
Any ideas...input...advice??
Thanks...
*******************************
I'll spare you the details on why I'm moving again...but...
When hooking up directv dvr can you simply "split" the cable right before it goes into the dvr box and put each split wire into Satellite 1 and Satellite 2 ?
Or does the split have to come from the dish?
Thanks,
Skid

It has to come from the dish split. As there are dual LNB's in the dish allowing 2 signals to come in at once. If you only have one cable coming in you have a single LNB and your DVR is pretty much limited to what you are watching.

Yep. We lived on one input for awhile. It works fine until there ar two things on at the same time you want to watch. It almost put you back to the VCR days! |

If it helps, Directv now has a troubleshooting area online and it's customers help solve the problems (just like here).
Look on the left side under Customer Service and then go to technical help. I do know that you do have to have two lines coming in for HD DVR, but not sure on the regular. See what you can find in the help section. :) |

No need to bump you have already been given the answer. Either get a Dual LNB or live with what you can get. You only have one sat signal coming in and thats all your going to get. Whats so hard about understanding that?

Sorry, Kenskid, MattO is right.
Think of it this way: each LNB has to have it's own cable running to the DVR. You can't split a signal from one LNB into two ports on the DVR.
Two LNB's will support two receivers, one line each. Or, it will support Tuner 1 and Tuner 2 going to one receiver.
In order to do what it sounds like you want, you need a splitter at the LNB. In order to support 4 lines from a dual LNB dish, you'd need two splitters at the dish and 4 long cables to run from the dish to the receivers.

IT'S NOT HARD TO UNDERSTAND...
However....if you see my updated post...I say that I split it and now can record one channel and still watch EVERY OTHER CHANNEL.
I thought this was kind of strange and felt "I was halfway there" so I asked for additional input/advice.
I come back to the forum and get insulted by you saying "WHAT'S SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THAT!"
How about saying, "sorry Ken, I tried it and it just won't work for you" instead of the smartass remark you posted.
Please don't try to help me in the future MattO !!
Thanks to all that tried to give advice.

Ken, do you already have a dual LNB? I know of some people that have it and only run one wire to it but split it before the DVR, and it works fine. Is there any reason, assuming you have a dual lnb that you only have one wire going to it? I'll talk to some people and see if I can get you a more definitive answer. As to you being upset about MattO's reply, don't be. It was nice of him to try to help, but assuming he did not read your original post that was edited, it seems the ignorance is showing with his rude 2nd response. Obviously, he is the one with understanding issues. Sorry Matt, but after reading this thread, seems you missed a part. |

Ken. I spoke to a few people, and it was suggested that the cables coming off the splitter should be as short as possible. Hope this helps, and will let you know if I come up with anything else. |

I dont have any understanding issues besides I cant understand why when given the correct answer its ignored. Here is a link to a site with some good understanding of why kenskid is getting what he is getting using a single LNB. I wont try to help anymore trust me, I know unappreciatted help when I see it.
Pay particular attention to the part of this where it says what the LNB is looking at as far as odd and even channels. You will understand why you need a dual LNB even with a multiswitch.
Link
I'm not helping anymore per your request.

Well now it seems that you have some good info there for me to read ! It is EXACTLY what I am looking for. Why didn't you direct me to this info before? Instead you decided to reply with what I and others (PM messages) feel was an insult.
Thanks again for the good link though.

My comment was meant to be rude, just as your choice to ignore my "correct" answer was rude. IMHO if someone takes the time out of their day to help someone and then its ignored or bypassed, its the same as a slap in the face, rude type comment. As far as why I didnt direct you to any site, let alone the one I just linked to? Why should I have to when I have given you the answer and a solution(get a dual LNB) already. I didnt realize that I had to back up everything I say in this community with a link.

Don't make me laugh!! Are you nuts? My additional post was RUDE ??? Come on man...now you're just trying to justify your insulting reply !
There is not way that an objective reader just happening upon this thread could ever say that either of my posts were rude. Your insulting reply however, speaks for itself.

I'm not trying to justify my response to anyone. It was taken by you and others as it was meant. As stated your choice to ignore my help was rude. Nothing you said was rude, just the simple fact that you chose to ignore the help I offered, and the correct help at that, was rude.

Keep tryin to bail yourself out...it's funny.
There are posts on here everyday where a reply is given...seemingly ignored...and then a bump with another request.
This is the first time I've ever seen anyone get so bent out of shape over a "bump" and a request for additional replies.
