First, let me stress that I am new to the "business" side of photography. I've recently had opportunity to photograph several events -- a friend's wedding, a community theatre rehersal and show, etc...
I'd like to present these groups of pictures online for my clients, but I would prefer to restrict access to certain lists of people. For example, only the bride and groom for the wedding shoot; only the director and principal actors for the theatre shoot, and so forth.
I haven't found much discussion regarding the levels of protection or security provided by the various online photo services -- i.e. account/password requirements and so forth. I've poked around several FAQs and how-tos for the more popular sites and found very little info.
So, for those with a some more experience in the world of professional photography, how do you handle privacy or protection of your galleries online? Do you completely forgo the online print services and stash them under your own web sites? Which online services do you use, and what sort of protection or privacy settings do you make use of for shoots you want to restrict from the general public's eye?
Thanks - Chuck

I use Smugmug, and I like it alot!
I generally put my client galleries in a private folder, and Smugmug allows you to remove them from Google searches to increase privacy. With unlimited storage, I also use it as a off-site backup for my original files, again in hidden folders.
Good luck to you no matter what you decide!

Thanks for the quick reply!
Does Smugmug allow you to actually protect your private galleries (i.e. account/passwords), or is it just hidden from public searches (security through obsfucation)? (Not trying to sound critical of it, just trying to understand how truly secure or "private" it really is).
Thanks!

Yes, you can password protect your galleries at Smugmug. I just never do, because when you do that it shows that a gallery is available but that it's locked up. I like my page to look a bit cleaner, plus, I can't remember all those passwords. If you just simply mark a gallery as "private" it won't show when people visit your portfolio there, it only shows for you when you are logged in.
In each gallery (or for your entire portfolio there) you can make it non-Google searchable. It's something called Hello World! I think. I turned it off for private galleries, and you can customize different gallery settings so you don't have to do it all time.
You can also distinguish between what Google can find and what other Smugmug people can find if someone tries searching on a keyword. |
