my brother JUST MOVED to san diego (like, 2 weeks ago). poor guy. i hope everyone's ok, but i'm going to be really ticked if everything i lugged down three flights of stairs here goes up in smoke there. :/
he lives near miramar air base so he's out of the way now, but the Google map link was incredibly helpful. thank you!

We're ok by MCAS Miramar so your bro's place should be Ok, fire stayed just north and east of us.
@ --> Telehubbie, JopperTom here is a coworker who I beleive lives in the same area of Poway as Brad. I lost email contact with him 2 days ago... he sent me a photo from his roof and then his last email stated that it was 10x worse than that photo and that he was out of there... Maybe they did get evacuated to safety.
And with Brad he could be really busy out there capturing some of these great shots he's bringing back. |

My sister lives in Temecula (in Red Hawk near the south end of Temecula) They're about a 1/2 mile out of the evacuation zone for the Fallbrook area near the Rice Valley Fire. I just heard from her and while the winds have calmed, it's still very hot & dry out there. But school is in and they seem to be fine for now. But since the winds have died, the air quality out there is really bad. Everything is just sitting over them.
I hope everyone else is safe or has found safety. My thoughts are with all of you. I used to live in San Diego. It's been hard keeping up with everyone to see how they are doing. :( |

From the photo that Brad posted that showed where his house is, I believe he was right on the edge of the fire. I'm certain that he would have been evacuated from that location. He would be south of Poway High School, and I don't think the fire reached there, but am not positive. |

Hi all,
No evacuation as of yet, doubtful we will be. We were lucky, as we could see flames from our house.
Spent the day yesterday behind the fire lines in the Del Dios Highway / Lake Hodges areas and didn't get back till late last night.
Just made it to my shop here in Escondido, and all's well here too. National Guard all along the way too.
Now to try and wait until some kind of normalcy returns business-wise.

Not sure when either of us will have time but, your all in for a great story from "The Adventures of Brad and Nick" photojournalist extrodinaire. Brad and I met up yesterday and spanned the entire county shooting everything from burning homes to Camp Pendleton evacuees. Brad met up with me and spent the day behind the lines. When explained he would be in eminent danger and in harms way he was like a kid getting a puppy. "Yeah, yeah , yeah okay, okay, can we go already!!!" Never have I seen anyone anxious to go into a fire zone.
Brad, sorry about the camera battery. I hope yopu enjoyed the alternative.
We'll post the story and pics when eveything here calms a bit. I need to get back out and shoot some more.
Hey Brad...are you with me? |

You know the number.
Burst mode on the MarkIII is pretty amazing - you should see the animation of the water drop. (wouldn't a movie camera be cheaper??) lol
btw - did the soles of your shoes melt? Mine have a few battle scars.

My sister just sent me this link, not sure if anyone else has already posted about it but seems to have a lot of useful information.

Brad & Nick, you guys be careful out there. (although I have to confess that I'm a little jealous) |

I wandered out and about a while ago to see if I could buy some drinking water, and a few other odds and ends. I felt kinda like the Road Warrior...all that was missing was a Queensland Heeler and a sawed off shotgun!
The most active fire I saw was around the northwest side of Mt. Woodson. It does now look like it is headed towards the Mt. Woodson Estates area, however, it is being attacked with vengence from the air. From my vantage point, I couldn't see the ground crews, but am certain that they were there.
My guess is that the firefighters will defend the mountain with everything they've got. Not only are there very expensive homes around there, but the top is covered with critical communications equipment. The fire bombers has already "painted" the top of the mountain pink with fire retardant to help protect it just in case the fire makes it that far up the mountain. |

Just a few more from the war zone...
Though these aren't the multi-million dollar homes that are so sensational in the news casts,
they are still people's homes & property, their lives, their belongings.
Truly a sobering and very sad experience to see up close.
My hat goes off to those that fight so hard to protect our lives.

Be safe guys.
We are hearing quite a bit about your fires here in Australia.
America & Australia share a number of fire fighting equipment (Water bombers etc) and sometimes manpower as our fire seasons are(normally)at opposite times of the year.
Thanks for the great photo's and the updates.

Thanks Lynn.
I also compiled a 28-frame sequence at full resolution, resized and converted to gifs, while using
the MKIII in machine gun burst mode, of a helicopter water drop:

brad, thanks so much for bringing this tragedy to life for those of us who aren't there to experience it. its important that we all as californians, and all as people of this world, are aware of whats happening.
