stupid question but do you think it would be legal in advanced if I created an empty layer, painted a gradient in it, and reduced the opacity to about 10%? For example if I were to put an orangey-pink gradient in to help along a sunset?

A hue/saturation layer, where you colorize to help the sunset, with a gradient mask would be legal in advanced, I think. SC will opine authoritatively in due time I suppose.

Yep, that's legal. It's the same as applying a color filter on a graduated selection, but of course more flexible.
