This has probably been suggested in one form or other before but in light of Simms's Mentor - Apprentice - One on one guidance I feel this site feature would be a great benefit to conducting the mentor/mentee process. The privacy would allow for photos and ideas to be discuss that could end up being used in the challenges and also it would allow to keep the discussion on point and involve just those who have signed up with the particular mentor.

Since we already have private threads in place for the DPL I figure it might not be too much more work to make more available. Anyway, just a suggestion. As a mentor it would help me greatly.

I second it.

You guys might try Hello. I use it all the time to share pix directly from my computer without going through all the hassle of uploading and sending a link, then discussing through e-mail, etc.

This has been brought up for SC discussion, but in the meantime, check out Hello! It rocks.

It's free, and seamlessly integrates with Picasa as well.

I'm not sure how the Private mentor area would work as far as uploading photo's to DPC, how could they be hidden to everyone else and viewed by your mentor?

Or is is as simple as haveing to upload your photo's to some other site to be linked.

You'd upload to your workshop folder like how the DPL folks have done it with their private threads.

@Laurie - I've used Hello before and I think I still have it installed on my computer. The problem is it requires additional setup on the mentee computers. I've had some problems already trying to just do it over IM and that also allows for file sharing. I'd rather just use something that is already being used by the mentees so to reduce the time spent troubleshooting/teaching how to use the software. Plus Hello's interface doesn't work well for what I need, which is a forum environment and not an IM environment which demands real time interaction for it to work.

The Hello program allows you to send files to any friend, and they get delivered the next time that person comes online; both people don't need to be online at the same time for it to work.

yahoo IM has worked for me in DPL as well as the mentorship program that Peter Bassbone is running for me, cynthiann and Hot_Pixel. We started a Yahoo group for posting images and we can swap, edit and add our points of view. Peter even posted files for his processing steps. Links can be posted as well. I thought I'd add to the options available since folks were wondering.
