for the thumbnails just click on the icon and add the 5 digit id number of your image, that's all.

Excellent first attempts, good subjects that all tell a story.

Number 1&2 are a little too contrasted and could bear some more shades of gray; just enough so we can a feel of the cat's pelt for example.

In #3 since the sky is white anyway, lighten the buildings a bit.

Your lanscape is the richest in shades of gray and is well composed. perhaps the sky could be independently darken a bit(?)

The white lines on the wall in the composition of your last picture detracts us a bit from the main subject. Perhaps the sleeper positioned at the top of the frame would have worked better. Its more the story of the "man on the street" than the "man along the wall" as I see it.

Good work!
I you haven̢۪t done so yet, there are many posts in the forum concerning the convertion of color pics to B&W that can be very useful.

I am doing lots of research myself on this topic lately.
here are my latest (much more trivial subjects but nice midtones):

When you get through with your research, feel like sharing the process you settle upon ?

I understand the comments about the lack of tonality in the cat shot, but somehow the almost paper cut-out feel to the cat works for me in that shot.

first, the subject matter is incredible! great job 'seeing'.
secondly, I love the black and whites you have created. The boy's face could use a bit more brightening to show his expression...
nice job! you should be proud of this collection.

Thnks to everyone for the comments so far, they have been helpful. Well, I just woke up and did another one, so here is it.

Oh, about the thumbnails, I have them uploaded from another site, so they don't have the same image ID system, I think that might be the problem.

If you can't post thumbnails, it is considered a courtesy to post a link to the picture instead. This is especially important for those who are still on dial-up. Thanks.

I also have become enamoured with BW these days. It's lots of fun playing with contrasts and midtones, without having to worry about the colours. Trying to get pictures to wow without the colours is a great challenge and very rewarding.

Skamal - I like "slumber" and "other side" the best. Very moody. Good work.

Skamal, very nice work though IMHO the first ones are a touch too dark. My favorites are the one with boy in window and the last one with the horse! The horses feed box and face are just a touch over exposed unfortuantely... It's nice to see a 'high key' B/W shot once in a while!

i like all those shots as well, but i agree with the Between shot. since the sky is already going to be white and blown out, you may as well allow to light up the buildings a little bit more. still, comes out great. good work!

i was going to comment that all of the pics in the first post look a little too dark on my monitor, but maybe it's just me - but great contrast in all of them, which i'm sure will remain the same whether they're 'dark' or not.
