We're heading to Vegas February 3-8 (Sunday-Friday) and I'd like to hear some suggestions on hotels. We're really looking for a hotel with a pool that will be open then, but that's unlikely. I have stayed at The Mirage, Treasure Island and MGM and my girlfriend has stayed at Luxor and NY NY. But, we'd would like somewhere different this time. 1 thing we'd really like is to stay somewhere North of Tropicana Ave for less walking. Money is a bit of an issue and I'd like to keep the trip under $500PP (hence the Sun-Fri).
Some hotels that (prices according to Orbitz) we're looking at are:
Cheaper:
Circus Circus $339 (a bit further North)
Excalibur $348
Tropicana $356
Midrange:
Luxor $399 (a bit further South)
Monte Carlo $410
Flamingo $435 <---currently in the lead
Getting close to our limit:
NY NY $471
MGM $477
Treasure Island $483

We spent 5 days at the Circus Circus in February a couple of years ago.
Here is my 10 cents worth in case it helps:

The Circus Circus hotel is old, very old.... and tired. I actually thought it would be gone by now. We stayed there (of course) because it was the cheapest, and we didn't care very much that it was dingy (except for the rattly elevator... that was a little scary). We didn't spend much time in the room, so cheap was good. The little circus performances make a cute little mini-outing when you don't feel like going elsewhere.
Downstairs is a buffet restaurant that was quite reasonable in price and quality.

The outdoor pool was open (but only during the day, rather limited hours) but NOT heated! Right next to it is a rather large hot tub, though, which is heated....... and very much so!

We didn't have a car for most of our stay, and took the bus to the strip. The bus was a nightmare! We often had to stand outside in the rain, waiting for buses that were incredibly late, and unbelievably full! Many, many times they didn't even stop because they couldn't possibly have squeezed in a mouse, let alone another person.

Because of the very pathetic bus system, I'd prefer to be closer to the action next time, but then again, not ALL the action is on the strip, either. I suppose you could use some of the hotel savings on cabs, instead.

Be prepared for LOTS of walking. Each casino/hotel is huge, and they make you walk zig zag past all the slot machines first before you get to see the other bits.

We rented a car to go to Red Rock Canyon (and Hoover Dam etc), which was a fantastic outing, make sure to go there. We loved Bonnie Springs - such a hoot!

The last time the wife and I visited Vegas was in 1999 and we stayed at the New York - New York. In 1993 we stayed at The Mirage. Of the two NY-NY was the most exciting with more to see. You feel like you are in new York while standing outside and inside. They even have smoke coming out of the street covers. It is one of the best placed hotels on the strip. More Super Hotels in walking distance. The closer you get to downtown the stranger!!! Anything (at that time) past the space needle was, at your own risk. :)

I know things have changed a lot since we visited but don't forget see some of the classic hotels such as Cesar's Palace. Circus Circus at the time we went had good coupons where you received $20 in casino money just for visiting. Just remember there are a lot, I mean a lot, of hidden gems on the strip that is easily missed so look closely. You don't want to miss a thing. They will be plenty of time to sleep when you get home.

Personally, I think Luxor is way cool; that's where I'd stay if I were going. I like the design of the place. But it's a personal preference...

I have been lucky enough to have been to Vegas many times and stayed at several different hotels on and off the Strip. So here is my two cents worth.

Circus Circus- Very dated, to far way from the main part of strip, pool area is poor and usually filled with little kids. Amusement park out back is just for kids.
Excalibur- Starting to show its age, cheesy theme. Good location. Pool area is nice but usually filled with kids. If you have never been to the jousting type dinner show they have check it out it can be fun.
Tropicana- Starting to show its age, good location, pool area is nice.
Luxor- newer hotel in a good location maybe a little far off the main part of strip, pool area is nice.
Monte Carlo- (have not stay there)newer hotel in a great location, have not seen the pool area.
Flamingo- Starting to show its age, great location, great pool area. Margaritaville restaurant and bar on main floor.
NY NY- (have not stayed there) Newer hotel in a great location, have not seen the pool area. Great piano bar on main floor. Roller coaster on the second floor.
MGM- One of the best hotels, great location, lots of good restaurants, great pool area but a long walk from the hotel rooms.
Treasure Island- (have not stayed there) Great location, have not seen the pool area.

I'm going down to Vegas in two weeks and will be staying at the Flamingo. Mainly because of the location and pool area. I also got a great rate for the weekend that I'm going. But if it was not for getting that rate I would definitely also consider the MGM. As far as finding out if the pool area at your hotel is going to be open, best to call the hotel directly. The weather can be cool in February. I was there once in January and saw it snow.

Circus Circus $339 (a bit further North)- I do not like the ammount of noise in Circus Circus and it is very outdated, still looks like it did when I went there with my parents in the 70's
Excalibur $348 - Stayed there once, felt like I was in a motel six type room.
Tropicana $356 - Not sure
Midrange:
Luxor $399 (a bit further South)- Decent, as you said it is more out of the way.
Monte Carlo $410 - Nice hotel, never stayed there but friends who have liked it.
Flamingo $435 <---currently in the lead - Not sure
Getting close to our limit:
NY NY $471 - Nice
MGM $477 - Nice

Downtown Golden Nugget is worth checking into if you are willing to stay downtown. I stayed there once and we were very impressed with the rooms at the rate we got.

Well, we decided to stay a little further South at Luxor. She's stayed there before and liked it and I haven't stayed there yet and heard good things. I would have preferred to stay closer in the middle, but it's all good.

Thanks for the advice and if anyone would like to meet there, maybe we can have a GTG?
