Welcome back, Tarique.

Let's have a cyber-beer and commiserate our losses...

It certainly would. The left side is in clear focus, and the right not.

Now would be a good time to have received my 10D and 50mm f/1.4 lens... (DOF control on my G3 isn't that good)

Good that you put the emphasis on both the 'digital' and the 'photography'
if it were a film photography site I'd be more upset of a well applied gaussian blur successfully faked shallow DoF

As it is - it is _really_ hard to get realistic looking lens blur from a gaussian blur filter. Though I suspect many can't tell the difference...

Agreed - I have attempted it many times when my DOF has gone to pot.

Vety hard to get the graduation right, more effort than it's worth IMHO

I am expecting to see lots of this lol -> //www.creativemac.com/2002/07_jul/tutorials/dofpshop.htm

Awful!

Agree that that tutorial provides horrible results!

But Imaging Factory does have a plug-in called Simulated DOF that appears to apply the blur gradually...

How shallow is "shallow"?

That's what I want to know. With my setup I can only go so shallow. Will I lose points for this reason?

Larger image here

Is this a photochopped image?

Is this depth shallow enough?

Will that be enough to fool most of them ;)

why would you want to fake it, when its fairly easy to do it with a camera?....

You know that I'm kidding,LOL :-)

But ,it 's going to be a lot of doesn't meet the challenge comments ,or not shallow enough for me, or this photo doesn't do it for me ....

Two months ago I would agree with you, but I personally have been a little dissapointed with some of the choices for challenge topics. With the simple P&S camera like I have it is very difficult to achieve as awesome affects in PWL or Shallow DOF. And with as little time as I have had lately, I had to sit out PWL because I didn't have any extra time to play with it. I kind of groaned when I saw Shallow DOF as a challenge this week because I don't know if I'll have time to play with this one... With higher end cameras you don't necesarily need to experiment as much giving some an edge.

With Photoshop and a very selective choice of subject placement and background framing I may be able to pull it off with less time and effort...

You are right about that, last few challenges are for advanced cameras and Photoshop users. With the Rebel I can blur half of the cat from 2 yards away, where with camera like TooCool owns you have to came close up to the whiskers.

Hmm... I want a DSLR as well, should start moonlighting.

Anyone needs "Wrote the Book" level PHP guru? only $10 an hour :D

By the way, changing the subject,I noticed that Rebel prices are up because of short supply, places start charging extra 80 $ for the 18-55 lens, for a total of $1062 , this is price gauging...

Here's a link dealing with the DOF issue and DigiCams

This is my understanding of Shallow DOF:

The elements thrown out of focus are still relevant to the object and it is known what they are, they contribute to the overall image.
