I would like to go to Indy(car racing) this year and take some photos, Im guessing that a tripod is out of the question but a monopod? should i phone ahead and ask. Would there be any camera size restrictions?

also in the ticketing info I found this

section 7

It specifically states that you cant put photos on the Net. How serious is that? And what is Domestic purposes?

(I did ask this a few days ago but put it in the wrong section :(

thanks

there is no restriction on cameras, but you don't need/want a tripod or monopod (if you had a lens large enough to warrant that, you'd probably be credentialed ;-)). there might be a restriction on the size of bag you're allowed to carry in, though; you might want to call about that, but you don't need to draw unnecessary attention to your gear.

7. Images and sound recordings of the event taken by you with camera, video or audio equipment cannot be used for any purpose other than for private and domestic purposes, that is, you cannot sell, license, broadcast, publish or otherwise commercially exploit them. In particular you may not make available any moving footage, sound recordings or series of still pictures taken at the event on the internet.

private and domestic purposes = personal use only

series of still pictures = a burst that could be made into a video stream.

their intent is to prevent unlicensed commercial use of images. there's a huge difference between posting up a handful of low-res shots in an online gallery and putting a ton of high-quality, high-res, commercial grade shots out for sale. they are more concerned with the pro and/or semi-pro coming in a getting a bunch of good shots, then selling them. it's a matter of intent and whether or not you actually damage the IRL financially.

have fun!

I got press access to an AMA motorcycle race a few months ago. That meant I was down near the track. I tried using a monopod like I do at sporting events. But decided that the motorcycles were whizzing by so fast I couldn't keep up with them using a monopod. So I ditched the monopod and just shot the photos by hand.

awesome, thanks for the advice, sounds like the monopod can stay at home as well :)

Do you find any use for a wide angle lens? perhaps crowd shots and the like?

another newby question as I haven't done much at motor events, would it be better to get a grandstand pass or just general admission, I'm thinking that the crash barriers might be too high to get clean photos.

Cool shots. You are lucky you are allowed to put them up on your personal site too. That often seems to get restricted, even with a media credential.

If you can carry a monopod that will shorten up enough, you can hook the foot of it in your belt, and it takes a huge load off your shoulders if you are shooting with a long lens. With that setup, you can follow the action by moving your upper body and get smoother pan shots. This works if you can stand up and shoot, and I have done the same while riding seated on a swamp buggy taking animal pix.

Hi Steven

If you want to get some mates together and stay for the weekend I have booked an apartment that I am trying to get rid of (another commitment has come up). We are at Main Beach right on the top end track (all be it 15 floors up. A bit pricey but well worth it if are interested.
