Stupid question,
If I voluntarily remove myself from a challenge, am I right in thinking it counts as a DQ, even if no rules are broken?
Yes, my still life entry is bombing ;-) the alternative is to let it bomb and chalk it to experience, but I want to get my average up. |

Yes, it counts as a dq. And if you were to get a 2nd dq in 25 entries, you could face a possible suspension.
IMO, better to just take it as a learning experience, and let it ride, man. :-) We all have some stinkers in our history. :-) |

| Why worry about your average? It's not like this is baseball and your paycheck depends on your performance. I assume that you use the feedback and scores you get on your entries to improve your future work. While requesting a DQ will make your average score go up, you will lose the feedback you haven't got yet over a meaningless statistic. Then all it would take is one simple mistake violating the rules on a future challenge entry and you'd be suspended. |

| Actually - I dont believe the average score would go up. While the image might not show up in your profile I believe that the votes you have recieved already on that image stay in your stats. I am pretty sure it works that way for a regular DQ - I think it holds true for a self dq as well. |

| Like I said I think I'll leave it be and chalk it down to experience. Thanks all for your views and perspective. |

| It does count as a DQ, but it doesn't show up as a DQ on your profile. |

Oh yes it does. I've got a pink stripe in my challenge entries from one.

| I have two self-DQ's that don't show up. If you slf-DQ because you broke a rule I know it does count. |

Soul, I've been tempted to self-DQ several times! One was a mistaken entry into the wrong challenge......(I was rushing my entry) and the other was one that was and is still getting POUNDED in the silhouette challenge and I really LOVE that shot! I didn't do it though on either. I let them ride because I figure that my life is not going to end with poor scores on them.
Do you know what the bottom line here is? Love what you do because if you like it, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of it. Please remember that what does poorly in here, could do very well somewhere else. The scores in here are NO real measure of your talent as a photographer! It's simply a measure of what the voters consider "appropriate" to this particular site's and the specific challenge's criteria. Nothing more, nothing less. It's all, also very much a matter of personal tastes and sometimes, personal emotions on their own scores....good or bad. Don't let it throw you for a loop. I'm slowly learning to let it all roll off my back.
FYI....I've actually seen others and even I, myself, have put up, professional photographer's work in here on discussion threads (without stating that fact) and watched THOSE photos being torn to shreds! Yet, the photographers have made HUGE money or been highly acclaimed for their work. Bottom line here is....NO ONE is "safe" from DPC voters's wrath!!! *grin*
Let it ride! Chomp on the bullet and take it with a grain of salt.
Best of wishes.

Nope I didn't break any rules. Just got pissy because I didn't like the score and requested it. says right in the box "per user request."

I talked about this in another post and hopefully you choose to stay in for a couple reasons...
1) Don't worry about your average.... maybe i am unique on this but when i check out profiles i almost never check out the average. I check out their highest placing pics (regardless of score) and then move onto the portfolio to get a sense of what he/she has. I normally look at a profile because of a picture that has peaked my interest when looking at pics taken by equipment or entered in challenges.
2) Even if its a bad pic that you are disappointed with, its still a picture that some will like or others can learn from it. Not too many pics that i have come across that i say i wish people wouldn't have entered lol. ALthough yes there have been a few lol

I never look at averages... Along with EyeTrap, I really think looking at the personal high scores and portfolio say so much more. They are more indicative of what I person has done. The average, although an intriguing point of interest, doesn't equate things between someone who has entered 2 chaleenges with someone who has entered 50.
Of course... I have been accused as being slightly off-target at times so ...

Thanks again for your thoughts, especially photointerest.
I'm keeping it in :-) Score is around 4 atm but was as low as 3.64 at one point. By the sounds of comments, most think I'm DNMC-ing and others have cited a technical flaw which I knew about when I submitted it. I won't say more so as to keep my shot anonymous. |
