Here's some 40D pics I took over the weekend. Note that I was shooting in JPEG (very rare for me), so it's not a very good test of quality. Still, I LIKE it!

Dust bunnies in my brand new 40D !!!!
I ran the on-board cleaning cycle several times, plus tried blowing them out - all the ones that are left, seem to be stuck there good and proper :-(
What should I do? Should I just live with it and clean it, or should I attempt to get them to clean it?
Who is "them" anyway? Ritz.com (where I bought it) or Canon? |
How did those get in there? Are you changing the lens at the beach on a windy day? ;-)

Nice pictures - but how does it compare to the 20D? is it heavier? bulkier? does the IQ really look better? Does the focussing really focuss faster? and is the shutter really quieter ?

It's slightly heavier/bulkier, focusing is faster and more reliable in low light, and the shutter is noticeably quieter, although there have been several times when I prefocus, then press the shutter button completely and nothing happens. I haven't quite figured out that issue yet. :-/
I can't really comment in the image quality until I go through a RAW workflow, where the 14-bit depth and highlight protection could make a significant difference. |

Thanks for the quick reply.
I used to suffer the problem above with my 20D, and it eventually seemed to go away. I was never sure whether I changed what I was doing or it changed somehow - but it is frustrating.

I have this problem occasionally on the 10D. In my case it's usually related to the fact that focus isn't locked. The dot in the viewfinder is flashing. |

Nope, this has happened both with a clear focus lock and with manual focus. |

I know it's not the answer you want on a new camera but popping the battery out and in always seemd to cure it . . that said I havent had it happen for along time now, so I'm really not sure what the answer is. |

Well I played with a 40D today at BestBuy. They pair it with a 28-135 IS lens and sell the kit for $1499. One thing about it annoyed me right off the bat. Why would Canon put live preview on a camera and then make it so you could only manual focus while using it? I like the 3" LCD. The weight and shape feel good although all I have to compare it to is my 5D. The guy asked if I wanted to get one today and I said only if they kept the lens on it and took $300 off the price. Of course they couldn't do that.

Hint: That 28-135 lens fetches about $300 on eBay. ;-) |

I thought about selling it because I don't really need the lens or want the hassle of getting rid of it. I'll just buy the body maybe when I get the urge.

Got my 40D yesterday. I was waiting all day for the UPS truck and I couldn't wait any longer so I left for work. I was at the corner & I saw the UPS truck so back I went. I'm so glad I didn't have to wait another day.
I haven't had much time to play with it yet, but here are a few pictures taken outside today. They are only cropped & sized. Tomorrow I hope I have time to go to the beach and experiment a little more.

It came without a manual, but I was able to find a PFD version online that someone had scanned. Canon is going to send me one, but that was kind of frustrating to find it missing.

So, from where did you buy it? Is it gray market? Many gray market camera either have a manual written only in Japanese or no manual at all. I'm assuming that all the other paperwork and CDs are in the box, since you didn't mention it.
I had a few minutes yesterday to capture my first photos with my new Canon EOS 40D and the Canon 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 EF IS USM lens (see thumbnails below). The camera feels really good in my hands, but I'm still getting used to the buttons and menus.
The IS in this particular lens seems to be very good. Both photos were shot handheld. The first was at 1/15 sec. The second was at 1/30 sec.
.
I'm hoping to get some good shots this weekend with my other new lens (Canon 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 EF IS USM).

I bought it from digicombos.com. When I called them I found out they are on holiday until Sunday. How convenient. It does appear to be for the Asian market from the box. The CDs were there, but warranty card, pocket guide, CD ROM guide were missing. The box was for the camera & kit lens so they must have taken the lens out since I was buying only the camera.

My 5d has some sort of dust in the viewfinder; so did the one I had and sent back..haha...the one I received was fine for about a month then the dust appeared...in Canon forum this appears to be a common problem..annoying, but I've learned to ignore it...haven't had much sensor dust yet. |

That sounds like a typical gray market purchase. There is nothing wrong, nor illegal about this type of sale (other than missing manuals, etc). In fact, good deals are often found with these items.
However, you may want to ask them about warranty. Can you get warranty work from them, or do you have to send it to Canon USA, or do you have to send it to Japan?
