My title hinted at it, but I figured only a very few would understand the reference. This is one of those rare times I wish we photographer's comments available to the voters. Alas, we don't, so here is the story for those that are interested.
Overhauling History is the shot.
This is the story.
The section behind the workers is the part of the building most damaged by the bombing. I thought the title fitting since so much progress has been made in the peace process since that time, though there remains much work to be done. Peace is something that needs to be constantly maintained and worked at - it's not something we can bring about by sitting and hoping. Thus the title and the shot.
Thanks!

If I had time, I would read every National Geographic cover to cover; the articles are all very good. But I don't have that time, so I usually flip through the pages and read the articles that catch my attention. If this photo were in National Geographic, it would have compelled me to read the article. Thanks for posting the link to the story. |

I'm with you, I think a "description" link for every image should be an option. This would increase the attention to more symbolic and meaninful shots, which right now are overlooked by most. People avoid making to elaborate shots in fear of them being understood by no one. I think art isn't necessarily stand alone; much of art only becomes art contextually and and caption for pictures would help.
It would also avoid explanatory titles, which ruin the "moment" sometimes.
We should suggest this to the administrators.
If anyone has counter-arguments for this, I'd like to hear them. Maybe I'm overlooking situation where this would be a nuisance. |

The idea of descriptions has been suggested previously. The main argument against it has been that people might use it to evoke sympathy for their shot and unduly affect their scores.. i.e. this is a photo of my dog that was killed last tuesday.
I waver on this issue, there are times when I think it might help and times that I think it would harm. Mostly, I think it would harm. I submitted my shot fully knowing that 98% of the voters wouldn't get the full implications - the shot was meant to stand on its own without any background context. |
