Every time I order something from a specific camera site they try to get me to upgrade and/or buy other things. It's kind of annoying. Today I called to verify that I had, in fact, ordered the Canon 40D and the guy I talked to managed to talk me into changing the lens I had ordered. I had originally planned on getting the Canon 70-200 F/4 lens, but the guy on the phone swore that the Sigma 70-300 was a better lens for about the same price. Has anyone used both of these? I used to have a Sigma fisheye that worked pretty well, but... I figured it would be okay to go ahead b/c there's no restocking fee if I decide to exchange after I research it. Also, he told me he was going to upgrade me for free to a foreign 40D body which is made of a different material and is selling for about $400 more... has anyone heard of this because I haven't?
Edit to add: can't find the Sigma lens on FredMiranda.com.

I have used the Sigma 70-300mm APO model, not the cheaper version, and it was a great lens, not soft at 300 and pretty quick focussing. However, I am not sure if that is the model being offered.
I don't understand the foreign 40D body upgrade, how is it made of different material and costing $400 more, but for you, FREE!
I would have serious doubts about his claims. |

Where are you ordering from??
The canon 70-200 F4/L is way better than a sigma 70-300, and import bodies are priced cheaper..

there are plenty of review sites for lenses but have a quick look atfredmiranda to see for yourself.
The 70-200F4 is a very nice piece of kit and highly regarded. Not so sure about the sigma... |

| I'm ordering from Broadway Photo. It is the APO lens he was talking about. I'm not sure it was an import body, per se, because he said it has a US warranty... just manufactured somewhere else. It sounded fishy to me, too, but I'm still looking into it. (It's free b/c I didn't want to get a separate charger and he told me if I did he'd upgrade the body for free, btw.) |

Sounds good, but how do they do a body upgrade? The 40D is as specified by Canon. Don't see where a body upgrade fits??
Perhaps I am a blockhead, but a camera body is the same wherever from to me. Even a grey import is the same body without warranty! |

He must have meant the sigma 70-200 as that is about the same price as th canon 70-200. The sigma 70-300 is a budget lens, i would stick with the canon 70-200 for sure.

Broadway Photo has a very mediocre reputation. I'd stay away from them myself. Sounds like they are gaming you. He's trying to switch you to the Sigma because they have a better profit margin on those. The Canon 70-200 f/4L is an exceptional lens; don't be dissuaded from buying it.

| It was definitely 70-300, not 200. He said the optics are better and the lens is lighter than the Canon. I expressed skepticism and a reluctance to buy a Sigma lens that I wasn't familiar with, but he insisted that it was a better quality lens. I don't know, it's all kind of weird, but I might wait to get the stuff and then exchange the lens if I need to. |

So ironically I stumbled across a different thread about the same lens I was talking about. Here it is: Sigma 70-300.
Still trying to figure out the body thing. |

| Sounds like a bait and switch. Check out the camera store on - //www.resellerratings.com/rlist-s1-n1.html - They do not have a very good rating. I'm not saying this is not a good deal, just use caution. Also the Sigma lens sells for about $220.00 the canon for about $580.00. This should tell you something about comparable quality. |

Let me say this once. STAY AWAY FROM BROADWAY PHOTO. They were trying to sell me a battery for my D200 at almost 300.00USD. STAY AWAY.

Hi all.. If they are selling you the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro which I have it is a good lens sharp and fast.
I also have a Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS Which I love and is closer to the canon but neither are in the same class as the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM, I will give up either for the canon. Just my 2 cents...John |
