I just ordered this. It seems like a nice lens.

Could anyone send me some links to check out good samples with this lense and Canon.

Thanks

no doubt, the APO glass is what i owned, and it was very nice.
definitely worth the few extra $$$s

I can't cancel the order. I checked the images and APO is 500 percent better against DG only lense.

One more question for this lense though...

I had "Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD" for my Pentax about a year ago, and images came out pretty good. What's the comparance of the two would be?

If same, I would be happy with DG only, if not, I find something to do and probably return DG get APO or something.

sorrry to harsh

its not the car you drive its how you drive it, but the handling and all the goddies you will have to deal with,

just use your kit lens and save longer,
I promis you buying this lens will lose you money in the long run because one day you will want the better one and you cant sell this one for any money

I have looked at some of the DPC photos taken with this lens but without knowing how close the subjects were to the photographer its hard to know how well it works for telephoto shots. I am looking for something that will get me OK sports photos and where I can can reasonable nature photos such as birds and kangaroos. I dont need to see the whites of their eyes but need to get closer than my current lens.

if you are in a well lit environment for those sports and kangaroo shots (birds, iffy...with brush and such) you will get some alright detail. again, you have to factor in that it's not the fastest lens out there, hence the noticeable price difference.

if i had it to do all over again, i would have done without the 70-300 and just used that money towards saving to get the 70-200 2.8 is i ended up getting. far superior lens, but of course the huge price tag has to be worth it for you. i use it for weddings and such, so it was a must, but the 70-300 has put out some great shots. it just takes a lot more light

This was the first telephoto I bought. I would try to return it and save up for a more high end lens. I found when I bought any Sigma lens (70-300 APO and 24-70 f2.8) I was quickly disapointed. They are less expensive for a reason. The telephoto was fine in good light, but didn't have great color and didn't have the aperature to produce really nice bokeh. The 24-70 was fine in good light, but I bought it for a 2.8 aperature for low light. At 2.8 it was useless at f4 it was OK, but that didn't really help me. Also the color was average.

I know people can get amazing results out of those average lenses, but they have to overcome a lot to do so. Constantly adjusting to the environmnet to make an inferior lens usable is a pain although possible. You will be limited in where you can shoot if you don't have teh right equipment. ie you won't be able to get results from that telephoto in low light of a moving subject, its impossible, the mechanics are working against you.

That being said, I find that its best to save up and buy the right lens once. Each time I bought those Sigmas, say average of $350. When I upgraded to the right lens, an L series, it just made that purchase $350 more. Resell value on the third party sucks.

I know the L lenses are expensive, but I don't think there is a comparison in quality of both the actual lens and the images they capture.

I think I am kind of late cancelling this thing, I don't know. If I receive it, I think I will just experiment stuff, although I might hate it, I still am learning DSLR myself. and I am going to save about $500 for a nice zoom/macro lense for the future. but, before I do any purchase, I am coming here asking you guys... I don't want to do the same mistake again :(

I also suggest other members to do the same, unless if you are pro and know what are you doing in terms of buying equipment.

Why should there be any 'I think' involved? Call the place you bought it from and ask them if you can return it unopened, worst case for a store credit (since you want to buy the APO anyway). I'm sure if you tell them you thought it was APO they may be understanding, especially if you agree to taking credit instead of money back.

I've returned lenses to both BH and Sigma4Less, opened gear, with no excuse at all and received refunds with no hassle.

Now if you bought from Bob's Uber Ebay Shack or something then...

I am on the phone with them... I will try to upgrade to APO if I could
08/31/2007 10:43:02 AM · #17
I did it... Thank you all for the feedback... quick response. I just called them upgraded my DG to APO for another $60 bucks of difference :)

So, thanks again :D

For around $500, the 100mm f2.8 macro is the way to go. That lens is great, awesome macro but also a wonderful head and shoulder portrait lens. I use it a lot for live music shots. I would start saving for a good telephoto, get either the 70-200 f4 IS USM for around $1100 or go all out and get teh 70-200 f2.8L IS USM for around $1700.

I know its not a zoom, but for an extra $100, you could get the 85mm f1.8 from Canon. The quality of that lens will amaze you. I think you will be eventually disapointed by all the zoom telephotos until you get into the $1000+ range. Definately sucks that its all so expensive, but you definately get what you pay for as far as build quality, image quality and the kicker... resell value.

I have definately bought L lenses from B&H just to use for a few months and resell on ebay. I may loose a couple hundred, but thats not a bad rental price for 3-6 months.

Howdy,

I think I have the lens you're talking about... it's not too bad. mine cost me £60. Saying that i bought it primarily for the macro function, and now I know more about photography than i did back then, the macro mode isn't very good as closest magnification is 1:2, which is better than some but lacking when I have somehting better in mind.

I'm selling mine ASAP and probs gonna get the canon 100mm 2.8, or the 90mm Tamron 2.8 macro.

The sigma lens is also damned heavy and gets a bit too heavy after a time. Also, the AF kinda sucks too. Takes a long time to focus so go for MF and use AF for little tweaks, otherwise it hunts and hunts and hunts, then hunts a bit more.

I can't really expect miracles for £60 but it hardly ever gets used. But I did take this shot with it though, which isn't so bad...

I was fooled by the reviews in Amazon when I ordered DG... They were better reviews than some Canon lenses :/

After I started this subject here, I looked at the APO images in and the difference between DG and APO is like one uses plastic lenses other uses crystal lenses. Way too much difference for $60 bucks.

Heavy...maybe, but I don't mind, slow AF... I don't mind, I use manual focus %99 of the time... I like to have focus control on me rather than machine.

I had Tamron 70/300 before. I really forgot which one, but it was pretty good lens. I believe (looking at the pictures in DPC) Sigma will give me better results though.

Anyway, we'll see... As soon as I receive it, my photos will be up for everyone to see and maybe talk about it more :)

Amazon 70-300 APO DG

This is a good deal. The APO DG is a very good lens for the price, and the lens pen is a must have.

Edit to add:

APO is their better glass lens and DG is a coating they put on the lens to reduce lens flare. It's not one or the other.

Yes, I am back for serious games now with my sigma 70/300 APO DG lens. It is very nice, heavy (the way I like) and very good auto focusing, although I don't use it much. Macro is a killer. I can only imaging the pictures coming out of that thing SOON... no jealousy please, get your own one day and enjoy (to those don't have that kind of power)

:D

That lens is better than good. I have the Tamron 70-300 and it is no match to the Sigma. The APO version is worth every penny. Have fun with it and thank the Gods you managed to cancel and change the order!
