Only God Forgives (2013)
Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas
Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a man and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty. When Julian's brother murders an underage prostitute, the police call on retired cop Chang - the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter's murderer, then 'restores order' by chopping off the man's right hand. Julian's mother Crystal - the head of a powerful criminal organization - arrives in Bangkok to collect her son's body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and 'raise hell'.
Maybe one day this will be considered a Cult picture. Myself I can only say it reminded me of 'Twin Peaks' - weird and uninteresting - 2/10 and I am being kind here with the rating
Man Of Steel (2013)
Enjoyed this because it is different from the other Superman movies, much darker underlying themes with some good special effects - 7/10

*sigh*...okay...the tweenagers talked me into it...
FROZEN
6/10...+1 because I confess...I did shed a little tear...final score = 7/10
The tweenagers gave it a 8/10, but they are simply suckers for anything sweet AND musical.

The Horde (2012) 7/10
I thought this was going to be a pseudohistorical action flick (which is why I picked it), but it turns out to be a pseudohistorical meditation on humility and power, with some beautiful cinematography thrown in. (cinematography is photography that moves). |

Cloud Atlas - Cloud Atlas (2012)
An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant.
A long film but one that kept my attention for the near 3 hours. Some of the dialogue is hard to understand in places, subtitles needed ! Tom Hanks was outstanding. Excellent - 9/10
Lone Survivor - Lone Survivor (2013)
Marcus Luttrell and his team set out on a mission to capture or kill notorious al Qaeda leader Ahmad Shahd, in late June 2005. Marcus and his team are left to fight for their lives in one of the most valiant efforts of modern warfare. Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch. Emile Hirsch, Eric Bana
Based on a true story - Lone Survivor (Book). 2 hours long - I don't know how much the film relates to the book but It's entertaining with plenty of action with some pretty bloody scenes - Wahlberg puts in his best acting role for me. 8/10

No Country for Old Men 9/10
caveat: I didn't read the book, so for it was purely as a movie.
I like how this movie left out parts that most other movies would emphasize. It's actually quite a radical movie, and this will frustrate some people, who want to be satisfied the same way every time. But thematically the movie holds together, and is fascinating. |

Totally agree - it is pretty radical in its storytelling. Marvellous film. Have you read any Cormac McCarthy? I haven't read this one but some of his others such as Blood Meridian are stunning. |

As to recent films i've seen,
Man of Steel - 1/10 - One of the worst films i have ever seen. Like a series of 3 minute trailers haphazardly strewn together. I only watched it to the end in the hope that General Zod would kill Russell Crowe again.
The Act of Killing - 10/10 - Absolutely gruelling documentary in which the former gangster members of a death squad who were responsible for thousands of killings in Indonesia in the mid 1960's are tracked down, interviewed and are persuaded to re-enact their actions for the camera in a variety of styles which they do with glee. They can choose how to film the murders and torture scenes in any film style they wish - western, musical, gangster. It's very rare that a film leaves me physically and emotionally shaken but this one does. Incredibly thought provoking and terrifying. Not for the squeamish.

All is Lost
Robert Redford did a fine job in this nearly wordless sailing drama. I liked the movie a lot. The ambiguous ending made me think about what really happened. I've found myself thinking about the movie in spare moments today. 9/10 |

The Lego Movie - 10/10
Beautifully put together, and a great plot too. Plus, loads of fun with plenty of wit and nostalgia to keep adults amused. I loved it. |

The Cabin in the Woods. Definitely not what you expect from a typical horror film. NOT recommended for kids.

What you on about? The Cabin in the Woods is perfect for kids!! Teens anyway. I really liked it, a fun deconstruction of the horror genre for horror film fans. |

"To Catch A Thief" (Cary Grant/Grace Kelly) - 7/10
I enjoyed its story and Grace Kelly was another reason to watch it. Thought Cary Grant was way too old and not a good choice for the lead. But then all these old classic films have heroes that don't really fit the "hero expectation" of current times. But the role was suitable for him as a retired high-class thieve who enjoys finer things in life. Oh and it was light/funny at times as well.

"Oblivion"
10+ for the soundtrack!!! Infinite love for this sound track.
3 - Tom Cruise Performance (sorry...I'm just NOT a fan! *dainty yawn*)
7 - Morgan Freeman (Not an award winning performance, but YES! I AM A FAN!!!)
8 - Cinematography - Scrumptious scenery
Inception
???/10 - I really have to watch this again as I am sure I missed so many details. A rather fascinating adventure through the mind. Rather Escher-esque |

Nobody does cinematic soundscapes like M83. Gonzalez can really hit the heart.
I recently watched The Place Beyond the Pines and was blown away. What I thought would be a fairly simplistic tale that would likely get the heart racing at times and injured at others ended up being an extremely well-developed, delicately powerful film that reminded me of Crash in its depth and construction. Top marks. |

About Time
9/10 - yes 9/10 for a romantic movie. One of my favourite romantic movies, if not my favourite.
Ok, I will admit I love romantic movies (especially when watching with my wife). Rachel McAdams is once again perfect for the role. What I liked most about this movie is that it's a unique story, not the usual the main couple gets together, one does something that splits them up and then they get together in the end and live happily ever after. Non of that rubbish in this one. If you're reading here, this might be a spoiler. The happily ever after is proper and real, not implied, so that goes down very well with me. There is one major plot-hole near the end which could easily have been avoided (and I mean major), but I'll ignore it for the sentiment.

I've seen it but need a refresher on it. There's so much Hitchcock such that just when I think I have a handle on it all, someone (like you) mentions one that I haven't seen or havent's seen in a long time. Strangers On A Train just arrived from the library, so that will be my next Hitchventure.
Regarding Grant, I feel he was miscast for a lot of his roles -- too old, too uptight, too British, etc. But at the same time, it's hard to imagine anyone else in those roles. |

I don't consider teens to be kids :-) And yes it is a very well done film, with a disturbing premise. Great popcorn movie despite the incredible amounts of gore in the last 15 minutes or so...*bing* |

For me he's the best living American writer. I think I've read everything he's done; everything moderately well known anyway. The Sunset Limited was a surprise, given that he handles dialogue in such an apparently offhand manner in the Pretty Horses trilogy in particular. Sunset Limited is all dialogue (being a play) and it's some of the most perfectly judged & paced dialogue I've ever read â€Â¦ it's 'Elmore Leonard' quality :)

I just saw Prisoners and hated it. 5/10 maybe. I am sick of these plodding, washed out films. It also reminded me of No Country For Old Men which I also didn't like. |

Hah! You're another Elmore Leonard lover? I'm absolutely in awe of his talent with dialogue and pacing. What a loss his passing was.
On the movie front, we just watched "Love, Actually", which somehow we'd managed not to see all these years, and we were entranced by it. A frothy meringue of intertwined, feel-good love stories mostly set in London around the Christmas holidays. Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, Laura Linney, Billy Bob Thornton, Rowan Atkinson, and many others. What a cast! Of no intellectual weight at all, but wonderful entertainment. 8.5/10 |
