i bought a hotshoe cable today so i can put it on a tripod away from the camera from jessops today but when i take a picture with it the flash must not sync with the camera because even though the flash fires the pictures are dark
any ideas on how to fix this problem?
im using my dads jessops flash that he got free with his camera till i get a canon 430ex
could it be the flash thats the problem
i have no idea so any help would be much appreciated

What shutter speed are you using?

Was about to ask that. The Rebel XTi won't sync above 1/200 secs.

If you are using 1/200th and the flash is firing then either ISO or Aperture is the problem. Well, or the lens cap is still on. |

Or the flash power is set to very low, or a combination of the above and flash power.

Just looking and I don't see where jessops has a flash dedicated for canon... I do see one dedicated for Nikon though.
If it is a flash for Nikon, you should be able to use it in manual model, but not TTL mode.
Edit: Nevermind I found one.
Edit again: are we sure this is a TTL cable? Does it have matching connectors for the flash and camera, or just one in the center?

Check the flash that you are using remote for settings. You may have to use it in the manual mode, setting iso, aperture. Can you tell if it is firing before or after the shutter is open?
Meaning, before the shutter opens or after it closes.
It may be possible to put the cable on the hot shoe backward too, so check that at both ends.

The camera may be set to some kind of anti redeye setting, firing the flash on the pre blink for the red eye reduction.

i think im just going to take the cable back tommorrow
it really pissed me off cause jessops charged £35 for it which is a hell of a lot of money for a simple cable

I have no cable suggestion, but if you can afford a pair of remote triggers you would certainly enjoy them. |

Apologies for this very non technical response - I bpought a s/h Jessops flash and had similar problems - but there is a three position switch on the back of mine - and one of them makes everythinh hunky dory. If you have it try twiddiling it - I can't remember which one works. |

Is there a way to turn off red-eye reduction on your camera? Sounds like that is the problem. I know nikon has that ability. |
