Just a reminder that regular backups are (much) cheaper and easier than data recovery. I know this. Still got burned.
Go home today and run a backup. |

Unless my city gets hit by a meteor, I should be ok with my triple redundant RAID running off of my workstation which is backed up to an onsite server which is backed up to an off site server :D

I'm sure glad I had a friend to get my back, when I didn't do my backup :)
"Lost" 10,000 shots a year ago July when the hd crashed, my son tried recovering with no luck, put it in the freezer, then was scared to try again. A friend who I haven't seen in a couple years dropped by, took my harddrive home, and says he's gotten my pics back, just has to burn them :D
Nowwww, I'm backing up! |

What would you say is the best way to back up files?
Any programs to recommend? |

I didn't find Robocopy that easy to use or set up.
I've also used Symantec's Ghost ... but there are some problems w/ Ghost which caused me to switch. Not recommended!
I recently bought a 3TB Buffalo Terastation, configured it as a RAID 5 drive, attached it to our home network, and use Mimeo backup software to back up all the PCs in the house (4: my desktop and laptop, and my wife's desktop and laptop). I like Mimeo because it backs up the files in their native format and it is not required to recover the files. It's also brain-dead simple to set up and use and works silently behind the scenes to keep our backups current. I like the Terastation because it plugs into the network, not into any individual PC and seems to be reliable. And RAID 5 gives me some measure of protection from a drive failure.
Recommended.

I personally like Backup4All. Not to everyone's taste but it works well for me. And it made life a lot easier when I had to reformat my hard disk as part of reinstalling Windows after my motherboard died.
(I backup to a special directory on internal hard disk, then copy files to an external hard disk. Occasionally to DVD too so I can have an offsite copy if I need to.)

On the mac side, shirt-pocket's software SuperDuper!
Makes bootable drives, for $28 you can do "smart updates" only changed files.
(I'm beyond ParaNoid here, mirrored online catalog drives plus double DVD backups to different brand media plus superduper drive for current work...) |

| Simple and easy way is just to get an external HD and copy your important stuff to it once a day. Only plug it in to copy files and keep it in your fire safe (you have one, right?). Never heard of anyones hard drive frying and their external backup getting dropped out of a helicopter on the same day. |

Yep, I agree with the external hard-drive. I actually have 2 computers. The 2nd is my old PC, no good for running anything, but with a big hard drive, I switch it on once a week and backup to it. A firewire HD is probably even better. I also maintain some stuff mirrored on my laptop, and backup to DVDs every few months, keep a copy myself, and give a second copy to a friend. Almost everything on the DVDs is still also on my HDD, but eventually I will have to start culling what I keep online.
I use Syncback software (free) to duplicate the important bits of my data. Pretty easy to setup, and once it's setup, very easy to run a backup.
