I know it's just another shot of my same old hibiscus, but it's really being a learning tool for me because of the shades, lighting, texture, and its construction that makes the darn thing kinda hard to photograph in general.

Let me know what's right/wrong with this in y'all's opinion. I am having some difficulty in getting a good balance between detail and samoothness.
I have pretty decent detail without the noise in the leaves and stamen/pistil, but the background just has too much noise to suit me.
Is there a way to keep that bokeh effect without lessening the noise so much that you lose the detail?
And getting the greys right is difficult. I've been desaturating using the monochrome setting in the channel mixer, then trying to get the grey tones right by mixing and trying to keep the 100 ideal whilst changing the RGB values to get the tones I want.
Does that sound right?

Day: 8
To answer the question about my border and how it was created on the Hay Rolls shot it's really easy. When I'm all done editing I make sure the background layer is converted to a layer and I put a empty layer beneath that. I increase the size of that layer to taste and fill it black giving a simple black border. I then go into the orginal background layer and doubleclick it bringing up layer styles and choose inner shadow, double click it to bring up adjustments such as size, choke and opacity and adjust them to taste. then use a blend mode such as linear burn or color burn and it kind of bleeds into the photo. |

This is my August Free Study entry. I took it outside the hospital where my father in law passed away about three weeks ago. It's in remembrance of him. He was a good man and led a full, rich life of 86 years. I miss him.
