Definitely need a THICK skin here. Most of the people are pretty kind with their comments, but man, those votes.

4.6 is respectable for a first time out - a little low, but that would depend on how well you matched what people were expecting for the challenge.

This is a learning experience - if you can hang in there. It also helps to vote on as many images / challenges as you can - that way, you get to learn from other's "mistakes" and not just your own - and maybe even pick up some great tips here & there.

I've been submitting for about 4 months - had my highest scores in my first three picture. Things went downhill big time from there (can you say bottom 10?), but things've been doing a bit better - had a new personal 3rd place photo in the last couple of weeks.

A low score here does NOT mean you're not a good photographer or that your picture wasn't good. My highest scoring picture got dinged score-wise because it wasn't precisely level (see? a learning experience). Scores here are a measure of what the group likes (or doesn't), how well they feel you met the spirit of the challenge, and if your picture "grabs" them.

My advice - develop a thick skin and vote charitably - give ones you like good scores and hold off on the 1's & 2's unless the photo really deserves them. You're already doing the forum thing, so that should help too.

Must say I'm really disappointed by my score (and comments) in this challenge - I think this is a great shot, and the comments seem to indicate that people haven't read (or understood) the challenge rules. The challenge isn't to photo something moving fast, but something that conveys the concept speed (fast, slow, whatever).

Well its about right for me, not great, but my personal worst was 3.9825 on my second entry so I have Improved. As was mentioned a thick skin can be helpful, most comments are good, helpful or at least let you know that someone enjoyed your shot.
There are some that are for the thick skinned, someone I sent to this site on her first challenge had the comment (there is not special or WOW about this photo. Doesn't really belong here on dpc. sorry) Last part makes it harsh but she has entered again and is around 6.2 with current entry, so don't give up or let the bad scores or comments get to you have fun and learn.

It appears that I'm being penalised because my picture is of something fast, moving fast but not panned or motion blurred.

Starting to climb back up. For the second challenge, my score has only changed within a .3 bubble. Is that a good thing??

Consistency isn't always a bad thing - I dropped nearly .8 over the last few days, but it is trying to crawl upwards again. Too little, too late though I fear.

So in answer to your question I would have been much happier staying in a .3 bubble :- )

Besides you'll be on a comfortable PB if you finish where you are :- )

Can't really comment on that (or maybe I already have :-)) - the only thing I can say is that the remit of the challenge was to 'Show us something that conveys speed ' and sometimes a bit of context can make all the difference in actually conveying speed. I'm not doubting that your picture is of 'something fast, moving fast', simply that sometimes panning or motion blur really helps to emphasise the speed. I do agree though that it's certainly not always necessary .

It might look that way - but as ever there are only about 30+ people on the thread out of 201 in the challenge.

So I'm sure there are higher scores out there in the silent majority.

At least thigher scores than mine :- )

I hope there are some lower scores out there, too! LOL I don't think mine is the worst one of the bunch, but it's the lowest score anyone here has reported. 4.2514, yikes! Well, no one can say I don't take risks. ;)

Whatever happened to CONSTRUCTIVE critism?

lol constructive. Wrong website, my friend.

Sorry . . . is this the person who said in their previous post 'not very impressed with this challenge, most of the entries are brain dead' ??

I'm sure your remark was meant as a throwaway line - but I'm also sure it didn't build up anyone on a low score. More importantly was it an example of constructive comment ?

The pictures in this challenge do vary a lot in style, interpretation, and quality - but there are some great photo's and some great interpretations, along with a number of people still learning and improving.

I agree. I'm not sure if you were refering to me, but no, I never said anything about entries being brain dead. Usually when I comment, I either tell people what I liked or why I didn't like it (ie. out of focus, grainy, lighting too harsh, etc.). I consider that constructive. I get upset when I get comments like, "This is just a snapshot" or "This is boring". I'm admittedly not a great photographer. I'm am amateur, and comments like that don't help me improve.

I know, i'm a jerk aren't I? :P

Everybody should just relax, the one thing i've noticed is that everyone on this website is so- well, not relaxed. I don't have my thesaurus with me.
