After lot of review i found Canon S3 IS wihin the range and also Powershot A640. Can anyone suggest which is the better of both. get the olympus Stylus SW720 works nice but if the camera store has it get the 770 or 790, great camera by what i used of it it only supports jpeg but, if thats all you want is just a simple point and shoot its a good one cause it is water proof, can have 200+ lbs of pressure put on it and shock proof, the 790 is freeze proof to so hope that helped |

if your looking at the compact camera, the olympus SP series is diecent. SP-560 UZ is $500 8mp and has 18x optical zoom, which i believe is the larges on any compact camera out there, equivalant to 486mm
SP-550 7.1 mp 18x optic zoom,
and theres the SP-510, but that only has 10x zoom, 7.1 mp, member megapixel isnt everything, just means you can take a larger photo. but that is nice also with nature photos, then if you really wanna get in the action they make teliconverter lens for them all about $150USD should almost doubble if not almost tripple the zoom on an 18 x thats pritty diece |

I have been using a similar camera to yours, a Coolpix L6. I've taken some great pictures with it and I love it, but I also felt the need to upgrade. I just bought a Fujifilm s5700 for $249. I have not had opportunity to experiment yet, but I am looking forward to it. It comes in at the low end of what I suppose is now called a "bridge camera". |

The A640 is rated at the highest levels on DPReview and now Canon has announced the A650 which will boost the MP up to 12 and the zoom to 6x (35-210). If it tests as hihg as the older model I think I may buy it for a backpacking camera as I'm getting tired of carring all my gear up those mountains!

Yup and they just announced the SP-560 that is still 18x but gives a little wider short end at 27mm - 486mm but either will cost more than the $350 range requested

I have the S2 IS and love it, but my bro-in-law has the Lumix mentioned and I was really impressed by the sharpness. |

My mom just got the Canon S5 IS and is really happy with it. Having messed around with the S3 in stores, I would probably pick it for a point and shoot if that's what I wanted. Has many of the DSLR features and the controls are quite similar. A great camera to learn on and a good stepping stone toward a DSLR. Really can't comment on image quality or sharpness though. |

I would agree as a stepping stone. I started out with the rebel but it was too much camera for me back then. The S2 image quality and sharpness can be good if A) you have excellent lighting (like outside or using the flash) and B) use a tripod when indoors. It takes pretty good sport action shots too. I've had mine for about 2 yrs and i'm ready to go back to a DSLR, but have no money to upgrade right now.

I've been very happy with my Canon S3 IS, it is a serviceable P&S with enough manual control to keep me interested. I also purchased an excellent lens adapter from Lensmate, along with a couple of filters. The best part, I suppose, is that since Canon released the S5, the price has dropped significantly. |
