Hell:
a child whose mouth is bigger than his head.
black eggs.
a fish in an elevator.

Heaven and Hell are so abstract in themselves that the mundane serves to produce the image (theory 974b of 11,000):
Heaven is an orchard and a slippery kiss.
Hell is made of concrete and smells of piss.
And my fairy tale picture has been grinding out a slow anti-Jeb - it's just crept up over 5! |

Crap. My SP has crept up to where it may find a home in my top row. Here's hoping for a nice drop at rollover....
I don't have anything for the next round... still may shoot something for Hell, but then again may not. I think I get to go to hell (a fire base somewhere) for work, but wouldn't have time to process or enter anything from there anyway. And I figured no one wants to see any more pictures of Humvees (the last one did not so good) so I'm skipping the whole car thing. :-) |

So, Don, was I right? Do ya hate my glassware entries? ;) |
Hate them? I gave them an 8!! (that's the sum of both scores... ahem...) |
and now they're on the Posthumous Ribbons Thread! I'm practically having a love affair with your glasses! |

Free Study results are up in the results thread. I had forgotten about those. There were several top 5's, and Melethia led the way with a 6.94!
I might not have convenient internet access the weekends around the holidays, so results might not be up right away. I'll see if I can get my scripts accessible through some PHP/CGI script.

David, I've been going through the same thing with my portrait learning curve. I have found it to be a terriblt exasperating exercise in trial and error with one spectacular shot followed by/interspersed with absolute garbage. I'm narrowing the garbage somewhat, and getting better at it, but at one point I was convinced that something had to be wrong....it was, and it was me.
The upside is that there is hope.......8>)
Just hang in there and be more contrary than your bad streak, which will be daunting, but I'm also convinced that what Catherine told me the last time I was whining is ever so true.....shoot, shoot, SHOOT!!!!
Just to give you hope, this was 1000 ISO

I have found with the ISO settings that the grain goes down if you get more light in. I intentionally overexpose ever so slightly and that seems to compensate for some of the grain.
A friend of mine with a D2Xs who's pretty good just about fell over when I showed him that shot and told him it was at 1000.....it alkso looks really clean printed out in an 8X10.

Krnodil and Melethia, thanks for the nice comments on my Bow Lake shot from the FS. The 640 pixels just does not do it justice. I hope that gets increased very soon. On the morning I took that picture, it had just snowed and was very cold (-13 C). The water was not quite frozen on this lake, but was starting to crystalize so that it was very still, providing the great reflection.
If you are bored and want to check out a better sized version, feel free to go to Bow Lake Pic and let me know what you think. :)
thanks again,
Ernie

thanks Jeb. i think you are right i just need to keep practiceing more. havnt had enough time to really play with the new D80 to learn it yet.
That is an awesome portrait hard to believe it was at iso 1000. I need to learn to use some of the noise plugins too. |

Grrrr.... our system blocks access to pbase, so I can't see the shot, Ernie. You can upload a larger version to here for your portfolio. If you do, let me know and I'll check it out. And have you had it printed for yourself? I think it would look grand hanging on the wall!

I am really proud of Team Suck today. I was disappointed with the Fairy Tales challenge, full of Disneyfied eyecandy, empty of imagination... but you would never guess it from the Team Suck results. They show a sense of experimentation and wonder that keeps things interesting around here. Good job, suckers! |

Then there was timfythetoo's which combined all the elements - imagination, a story, a bizarre tattoo, a tutu (or a tootoo), fear and loathing in LA, and the proper DPC formula. Ruined many a monitor, I fear. |

I gave timfy a 7, which is a huge score when you consider a) he had no background and b) the hairy belly. |

Both the Toos constantly give me hope that "regular" people with "regular" lives can do well.
As does Jeffrey as well, actually......8>)
Wine glasses and Jello, indeed! LOL!!!

Just got a great, encouraging comment from Jeb on my auto pic, hot on the heels of a comment that made a list of 'faults', all of which were exactly what was needed for the picture to work. Heh. Thanks, Jeb. |

I've submitted my Heavenly entry. For sure I have another brown ribbon coming. Not trying for brown these days, just seem to be on another planet or something. |

Every once in a while, you get a shot where the technicals, composition, exposure and aperture just do NOT matter one whit.
A photo like this one : [thumb]621349[/thumb]
That's my mom, with "Bug" - my 3-yr old daughter. Last Wednesday afternoon.
It's not fancy, bad lighting, compositionally it isn't great.
But, you know what - Not one bit of that matters right now.
Because of this (this is a copy & paste) :
My mom just called. She wans't able to speak well. Said she's spent the day in the hospital, then kept repeating "definition hospital" and mumbling. Saying she wished she could explain to me what she meant.
Finally she put my stepfather on the phone.
Mom's breast cancer has spread again - to her brain this time.
She's on steriods to reduce the inflammation in her brain, and needs to go back to Kingston to see an oncologist.
Stepfather said she hasn't been able to finish a sentance in a couple of days, is having trouble navigating, is dizzy, etc.
they were here just one week ago today. maybe it's my rosey glasses, but mom seemed 'together' then. she spoke well, made sense, played with the kids, didn't have trouble navigating the stairs or seem absent minded at all.
tired - sure - she's always tired now, that didn't stand out.
can something like this really take such a drastic turn in less than 1 week ?
something that gives her such a grim prognosis ?
My mom is not old. She is 57. She's too young for this ****. I'M too young for this - I still need my mom. My kids need to grow up knowing her.
sorry for the typos.
