Kelli, I'm really glad to hear you're doing okay. I had my own little medical ... ummm ... discovery recently that turned out okay. It was concerning enough without involving my heart, much involving it twice.
Congrats, Rob. Keep submitting over there - there aren't so many of us, so the chance of actually winning seems decent. :)

Can I be so bold as to ask why they do not use the "true" definition of macro for the macro challenges? Is it because it would be too limiting because not many would have the proper equipment to make a real macro shot?
I do not have the equipment either, but I just thought I would ask. :)

As far as I've known, macro just refers to "close-up" photography. It looks likes the description mentions close ups. What "true" definition are you referring to? |

I think "true" macro definition is 1:1 ratio - not just close up, and not magnified to be larger than life.

Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes. I can't believe that score got me a ribbon. You see now why I was bummed out when it dropped from the 7:0 it was holding at 50 votes. I thought those two b&w portraits were going to beat me out with the 6.7 score.

Hmm. I'd say 1:1 or bigger. Doesn't matter - even getting close requires something special (either a setting on a P&S, an SLR lens, or one of several other SLR options like extension tubes.
So yes, basssman, I think requiring it is too limiting. Also, unless you're going to make it a special rule that not doing missing 1:1 is a DQable offense, you'd have no way of knowing it really was true macro anyway.
As to having the equipment, look up the specs for your lenses. Depending on the minimum focusing distance, you might get close and then really get there with cropping. My Tamron gets to something like 1:4.5 at its minimum focusing distance, and by cropping, I can blow it up further. Put those 10 MP to good use! :)

| If those without macro lenses, myself included, you could try lens reversal and stacking. That will give you a good magnification, though the focusing plane is so small |

That is exactly what I meant, yes.
No big deal. I guess it is just a little confusing by calling it "Macro" instead of just "Close Up" which is what the challenge really is. :)

I certainly hope they won't limit their definition of fauna to four legged mammals. But you never know.
edit to add: There isn't a gallery for birds -- they have to go in the animal gallery, so from a DPC perspective, I would say that birds are animals and therefore fauna.
