I mentioned that I was doing a portrait shoot for a charity benefit concert......we had a great time and I made a new friend.
Unfortunately, the pics all sucked and we have to reshoot.
The church came out beautifully, but the subject isn't in focus as he should be.

I'm in Deja Vu, and doing pretty well scorewise at the moment - 6.1 or thereabouts - early hours yet, so I wouldn't count on it. Might have something for Silhouette.
Moving still life sounds interesting... |

ACK - no matter how "outside the box" I think, I'm stuck with being all boxed in right now.

I didn't make my goal in candy of replacing a top five, but I'm happy how it ended. I'm taking a post processing class, hopefully I'll learn something. |

I'm really impressed by the TS turnout for the Candy challenge - lots of thoughtful shots. I went a little nuts and nominated a bunch of you for OOBIEs, but I'm feeling better now. |

Hi all
Well my Candy shot bombed, but I'm glad I was able to get that shot with my humble p&s. Deja Vu doing ok, (4.7ish, yuck) only I didn't make a feature of the pic as outstanding as it should've been. I'm in for Wealth, but I had already taken the shot when I read the challenge outline so some may DNMC it.
Hi Basssman and Patio and any other new members I may have missed!
Deb, beware the boomy things, and Jelena, great that you got a fave. It does kinda suck not having a pic faved for awhile!
Going on vacation next week, dunno about 'net access, so probably not entering anything. However will try to get some decent shots.
Should try to vote, by for now! |

Hello everyone! No offence to Team Zombie, but I like the nice relaxed name and nature of "team chasing butterflies". So if I have my choice I think I would like to join them. (especially since I am planning a trip to a butterfly conservatory in the next month or so to take some pictures)
On Friday I received an email from the manager of the Aaron Pritchett Band (one of the top country music bands in Canada) whom I know a little bit. He let me know that he left me a pass for that night's show which was at a bar in my town, and asked if I would shoot some pics.
I went and did so, unfortunately it is the most difficult venue I have shot in so far. The stage is not elevated and the crowd can come right up to the front of the playing area. So the shooting options were to shoot from the side of the stage, or to stand on a chair and shoot over the crowd. I did some of both. However the stage lights were not strong enough to shoot without some help (even with my 70-200 f2.8). I had the bright idea of shooting with my on camera flash set to -1 so that the shadows would not be harsh, which worked, but it also un-exposed the shots, so that I ended up with a noise problem. :(
End result was ok. The opening act, Jessie Farrell, asked me to send her some pics that I took of her. I had only taken a few of her, but sent them to her management and they loved them and want me to go to a couple more shows to shoot her for use on her website and myspace page. It will be unpaid but help build my portfolio and contacts.
You can see the pics here.
I know they are too grainy, but other than that what do you think?

I think they are very good. The noise isn't a problem, as far as I can see, and the lighting is quite good. I think the musicians will be happy with the shots. |

Jeb - have you ever used the fill flash feature on your camera? If not, this would be a perfect opportunity. It has about 1/2 the strength of full flash, fills in the very near shadows, and usually creates beautiful catchlights in the subject's eyes. Unlike full flash, it also won't change the outcome of the background much. Edit to add: if you have a reflector, it would also help fill in his face.

It quit and I don't know why.

Go poke around in your menus, particularly any custom settings. I once put my flash in a mode where in certain circumstances, it would act like a strobe light, putting out multiple flashes in a burst. But not every time. I then forgot, and later couldn't figure out why I couldn't make the flash work the way it was supposed to.
Also, use a smaller aperture to get his face and the church all in focus. At 3.5, I'm not surprised he's blurry given the sharpness of the background.
On another topic, thanks, krnodil! You gave me my 150th favorite. :)

Hi guys! Thanks for all the great comments while I've been gone. Had some "health" problems that landed me in the hospital for a bit. Well, to be perfectly honest, I had a heart attack Friday afternoon. I just now got out and home. It's not really as bad as it sounds though. I had a blocked artery about 7 years ago and I had angioplasty with a stent put in then. The stent failed on Friday leading to a heart attack. I've been re-stented and all's well. I'll be out of work for a week and a half, but then back to good as new. |
