Believe it or not, the study of wabi-sabi was a big part of my master's courses in ancient Japanese literature. That doesn't necessarily qualify me, as a westerner, to provide the Japanese meaning of wabi-sabi, but I'll attempt to give the quick and dirty. And while the western title given to the challenge leaves out a critical part of wabi-sabi, I have a hunch that the winner will incorporate a sense of the original Japanese essence of the word, simply because a well-done photo that does so it likely to be more evocative than one that does not.

Confused yet?

To me a better translation of wabi-sabi is "the transience of beauty", "beauty and sadness" or "beauty and loneliness." "Sabi" is the root word for sabishii, which means "sadness" among other things.

The sadness and inevitability of the transience of all things is what I consider to be the true essence of wabi-sabi.

Robert Frost's poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" is probably the best Western version of the wabi-sabi concept I've come across, though it's much longer and detailed than Japanese poetry.

I'll leave you with my two favorite Japanese poems, one a line by an unknown monk from the 8th century, one a more modern-day haiku by the famous poet Basho:

"The World of Dew is the World of Dew...And Yet, and Yet..." (The world is transitory, all things are passing and the passing is inevitable, and yet we try to cling on. It's so hard for us to accept that nothing is permanent.)

"For a Lovely Bowl
Let Us Arrange These Flowers
Since There is No Rice"
-Basho

Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you further.... :-)

*scratching head*Thanks for the info noraneko....hmm...ok...but I think I'll stick with the hot, lime-green horseradish mustard paste that you have with sushi ;-)

LOL...next challenge, the wabi-sabi of wasabi. Let's show how there's nothing permanent about wasabi, unless you eat too much of it, and then, well, that's another story.

You know, this Wabi-Sabi business is a good example of why I find DPC challenging and interesting. I hadn't heard of Wabi-Sabi a week ago, and now I am seeing and appreciating it all around me. Thank you Christian for introducing it, thank you Catherine for expanding on it, thank you everyone who has questioned and discussed it, and thank you DPC for opening my eyes a little wider.

There's nothing better than learning about other cultures and customs, in my book at least. Wabi-sabi just happens to be one I know a smidgen about (and I'm not joking when I say smidgen - I've barely scratched the surface).
12/18/2007 10:01:43 PM · #2529
And I think wasabi is best served in smidgens. :-) For those who've never been brave enough to try sushi... Note that I am NOT a food person by nature, but I did have to try sushi one night or go hungry, and I was quite hungry, so I tried - very cautiously, I might add. Not a fan of the wasabi, though - don't like horseradish either. But if you like fish (that's kind of a biggie), try at least a piece of salmon or tuna on a little roll of rice. It's REALLY a lot better than you think!
12/18/2007 10:09:22 PM · #2530
Would anyone be willing to give me some feedback on my wabi-sabi entry, of course agreeing not to vote on it? It's been about a month and a half since I've entered anything, and I'm having a confidence crisis and can't seem to decide...

Then again, maybe I'm having the crisis because none of them are truly any good.... :)

Sushi is an acquired taste, no doubt, but once you acquire it, you start to crave it...and it's much better for you than chocolate -- at least in large doses :-) Deb's right - start with the easy stuff (i.e. California rolls) and ease into it. Tuna and salmon are usually the "easiest" fish for those not used to raw fish to try. Then move up to such delights as raw sea urchin gonads. If you think I'm kidding, look up "uni". Lip-smacking good!

Theistic perspectives and what passes for scores are up in the results thread. Congrats to hipychik and bmartuch for their respective top scores, and to wildcard for overtaking Melethia for the weekly top score.

Next week I'll be at the at the in-laws, and might be late updating the results thread on Sunday and Tuesday. I strongly discourage anyone from trying to do this by hand. Before I wrote these scripts, back when we had about a third of the people we have now, it took me forever to find everyone's entries. I don't know how quiet_observation did it all that time.

It's been about six weeks since I got something entered; should I move myself to Team Zombie? I did get my son a digital camera, and he thinks it's the greatest toy in the world!

Thanks, Rob, for a subtle yet very smile-inducing quip. :)

Catherine, thanks for the detailed explanation of wabi-sabi, but I'm afraid I'm jes' a simple boy who don' get that deep stuff. Like, what's Mountain Dew got ta do wif it? ;)

Sometimes I'm too subtle. I remember one year telling my coworkers that my drivers license was expiring later that week, but none of them made the connection that (in the US) licenses expire on your birthday!. Then literally the day after one of them happened to ask when my birthday was..

I turned scores on. I've been waiting to watch my eBay do a reverse Jeb, but ain't happenin'. It's not in brown territory, not in mediocresville, but somewhere between the two. What's that? Beigeville? The BitE will Jeb. Nicely at 6.6 at the moment but on it's way down.

Here's one I didn't enter (totally unrelated to entry) because I used one advanced editing step:

I like my entry well enough, but I like this one better.

Update: Starting to Jeb nicely in Everyday! :-)

To answer your question: No! If I don't get onto Team Zombie with my self-enforced abstinence, then you don't get on simply through attrition!

To your statement (about the camera for your sun), is it any good? The difference between the U.S. rating and the U.K. one makes me wonder if they sell a different camera "here" in the U.K. (I put "here" in quotation marks because I'm currently in Germany; but that is neither here nor there . . . well, I mean, it is here, or there, but it is also neither here nor there. Get it? Good, I don't, either).

U.S. reviews here (four stars).

U.K. reviews here (two and a half stars).

What's that about?

We do have the "new" version, and it's not an SLR, but it's very sturdy, which is a good quality for a camera you're putting in the hands of a 3 year old. The real resolution is only 640x480, but that's fine for web viewing. I figure this buys me a couple of years before he starts eyeing my Canon 5D.

Well, my BITE is sucking along at 5.40. I was hoping for better, but prepared for worse...

esp as I took it with my new D40, all set on auto as I've not yet read instruction manual!!! Woohoo!

My Beauty in Everyday is sitting at 5.09.
I did get a wonderful comment from Deb, so that is a perk. Though I have never seen Deb give a negative comment before. :)

On a side note, if any Team Suck members get up to Seattle by chance and want to go on a photo Op, let me know. I like that kind of stuff. Looks like Jeffrey recently came up and had a terrific time checking out all the site. I wasn't with him which probably explains the good time he had. :)

Cheers all.

But I am considering that I was up to my "important parts" in snow for 15 minutes while taking mine!

I think I want to join a team in "Team Suck" so I can be part of the official voting etc. Anyone want to point me down the path?

Robert, you must petition our Fearless Leader who will find some task for you to accomplish (I'm betting poetry will be involved.) But really there's no specific voting, unless you mean OOBIEs and YAPPIEs. We don't have a secret thread (though possibly a secret handshake, but I certainly can't tell you any more than that) and we don't see each other's entries except when someone asks for help (and non-voting that goes with that).

Where have you been? :-D

We had a whole discussion about you way back - start at posthumous's post on 11/07/2007 at 3PM...

Kelli and I are still waiting to hear what you think of our poems :P

You're already approved! Where have you been? Go back quite a few posts and you'll see the poems we wrote in tribute to you to persuade you to our respective teams. You're supposed to pick one... let me know what you thought of mine if you can find it ;)

Yeah, the OOBIEs and YAPPIEs is what I mean. I'll go look for those posts now. I been confused lately, both mother and father seriously ill and it is very distracting...

I think you'll need to undertake a secret task assigned by our fearless leader before you can be assigned to a team, Robert, though you're just what we need here: another Robert!

I'm happy to go by 'meyers' if that helps.

How did I miss this request? Mr. Music is already undergoing a secret project that will qualify him for Team Suck status.

Since he is a poet, perhaps the teams that wish to have Bear Music should write him a poem. The team that writes the "best" poem (or most appealling to him), gets Bear Music as a new member.

A sunset, a skiff,
the beauty of the reeds,
as dawns last light crawls across the water
of the naked sound...
and a Bear watches.

Here ya go, I found mine...
