Oh all my clients' horsies, ponies, donkeys etc were definitely were inside all day and all night, Ernie, eating hay and leaving the processed results for me this morning *sigh*...we got 37 cm here, how did P'borough fare?
Deb, it'll be great to have you back over here where you really belong, with your family, friends, cats, quilting and combat boots...
BTW things are really starting to look up.
I had my housewarming (aka early Christmas party) this weekend, got lots of nice stuff...the thyroxin is recalibrating my metabolism, so my body's getting itself back to normal...and not even a week ago I met a guy who is just so genuine, so honest and so able to crack me up with so little effort it's absolutely unbelievable...and he is the guy who built the second level of my house, put in the bedrooms etc upstairs! I have an incredibly funny pic of him (I didn't take it, but it IS hilarious) and will ask him if I can put it in my portfolio...
Edit: gushing about potential new bf :-)

I must have missed something. Are you headed back to Germany, Deb? |

Woo hoo! I'll bet you miss your kitty cats so much you could just cry. Just think, it's not long now. I admit I will miss your awesome photos of Afghanistan and Iraq, though. But would much rather have you "home" and safely out of harm's way. |

The harm part isn't a big deal - harm is everywhere. Missing my cats is a much bigger deal. I fear they won't remember me. :-( |

They won't forget you. Give em a day to be angry - then all will be forgiven. |

Peterpatch did ok, I think we ended up just over 30cm. We did not lose power at all, so it was ok, although my back now feels kinda like a loopy pretzel.
Glad to hear you have a new guy in your life, you deserve it. :)

OMG OMG OMG!
I just heard back from the guy in Brazil that wants to use a couple pictures... are you ready for this???
Playboy Brazil!
He says he has to talk to the art director and let him know he has photos in mind to go with the article (which I believe he is writing) and get approval and then will be in touch.
I could be getting on the map in a huge way!!!

Deb - fear not. It will probably take some time for them to readjust, but they'll get there. I was without my cats for one year, and Mr. Grey in particular was angry for awhile. But now they are both totally back to their normal, loving selves (in fact, they are both right next to me by the keyboard as I type).
Ernie - that's awesome news! |

Thanks for the good news, Susan, it's nice to listen to (read). |

Can someone give me a real quick version of Wabi-Sabi for dummies ? I read the wiki entry and still don't have a clue what it's about.

For Deb, and anyone else that is interested. Quilts are in portfolio under December. As soon as the backing for the stained glass bar sign is complete, I'll post that too.
Jeanne
Above mentioned items are reason for lack of photography pursuit!

Well, I'm off to finish the darned quilt for Christmas. Gotta ship it out tomorrow. |
Please take a picture before you send it off - and let me know when you stick it in your portfolio!! I have fabric waiting for me at home that I ordered from Keepsake before I deployed. It's not gonna be anything fancy - very simple, actually - but I'm looking forward to getting home and getting it started. |

Heh... thanks! I think "Beauty in the Everyday" and wabi-sabi can be considered two different but related things, sorta. I posted a link and a quote in a thread somewhere (I'd have to find it) but for the purpose of the challenge it's an opportunity to go forth and explore and look at things differently. Sandbags, for instance, can have nice lines and texture. Rocks can be kinda cool if shot in the right light at an unusual angle. Wabi-sabi, in my very limited understanding, includes not only beauty but impermanence and imperfection. (Hence rocks may not be the best subject.) |

Do you ever have those days when EVERYTHING you try to edit just looks like crap? From the beginning and then some? I swear, I look at some of this stuff that shows up on my card and think a half-drunk blind man borrowed my camera and accidently hit the shutter button while falling down. Though that may actually be interesting....
Anyway, I've stuck some crap in for the Everyday bit. Hate it. Liked it at first, hate it now. I looked at some stuff I stuck in my portfolio and wonder what I was thinking?
Of course, there are other days (yesterday for example) when I look back through some of my older stuff and think some of it is actually pretty good. And that's without the aid of alcohol-laced cough syrup, I might add.
Carry on. Just the ramblings of a women slightly stir-crazy.... :-) |

Believe it or not, the study of wabi-sabi was a big part of my master's courses in ancient Japanese literature. That doesn't necessarily qualify me, as a westerner, to provide the Japanese meaning of wabi-sabi, but I'll attempt to give the quick and dirty. And while the western title given to the challenge leaves out a critical part of wabi-sabi, I have a hunch that the winner will incorporate a sense of the original Japanese essence of the word, simply because a well-done photo that does so it likely to be more evocative than one that does not.
Confused yet?
To me a better translation of wabi-sabi is "the transience of beauty", "beauty and sadness" or "beauty and loneliness." "Sabi" is the root word for sabishii, which means "sadness" among other things.
The sadness and inevitability of the transience of all things is what I consider to be the true essence of wabi-sabi.
Robert Frost's poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" is probably the best Western version of the wabi-sabi concept I've come across, though it's much longer and detailed than Japanese poetry.
I'll leave you with my two favorite Japanese poems, one a line by an unknown monk from the 8th century, one a more modern-day haiku by the famous poet Basho:
"The World of Dew is the World of Dew...And Yet, and Yet..." (The world is transitory, all things are passing and the passing is inevitable, and yet we try to cling on. It's so hard for us to accept that nothing is permanent.)
"For a Lovely Bowl
Let Us Arrange These Flowers
Since There is No Rice"
-Basho
Hope this helps and doesn't confuse you further.... :-)

*scratching head*Thanks for the info noraneko....hmm...ok...but I think I'll stick with the hot, lime-green horseradish mustard paste that you have with sushi ;-)

Our little Syrian hamster friend left us on Sunday past, to go to the great dust bath in the sky.
Thankfully, the children are not too upset about it - though Boo (5 yrs old w/ Asperger's Syndrome) has asked several times why Charlie's heart stopped beeping.
We still had all our rodent gear, so yesterday went to a local pet place and garnered a pair of lively little "burbels"
This be "Burbel Brown". He and his brother, "Burbel Grey" live in a large wire cage in our living room. Spoilt things !

Thank you Susan - I'm glad to not have been alone in my lack of understanding. The definition was beautiful, but still beyond my intellect I fear.
But - you can keep the sushi. I've never been brave enough to attempt it.

Kashi, sorry to hear of Hammy going to the riverbank in the sky, but glad to hear that you have a couple of new critters to grace your abode. That picture is a cute little guy.
Well, I am in for B.I.T.E. . I actually really like the photo, which is likely the kiss of brown for it. LOL.
Good luck to all at rollover.

Thank you, Catherine, for the Wabi-Sabi crash course. I had a pretty good feel for the subject from the link that was originally posted by Christian in the thread for suggesting challenges. However, your addition of the 'sadness' element has enhanced my understanding, and I liked the poetry. I think I can still use the image I had submitted, but I changed the title.
