I'm looking into buying some pocket wizards to go with my SB-600 and SB-800. I'd like to use both flashes off-camera, and was wondering if I could do the following:

I'd like to have one pocket wizard on the camera body and the other on the SB-800. My question is, can the SB-800 be used in commander mode--despite being triggered by the pocket wizard--to fire the SB-600 as a slave?

I realize that I could use the on-camera flash to trigger the two flashes wirelessly; the lighting setup I have in mind, however, would make this difficult to accomplish. I also understand that I could use a third pocket wizard, but I'd rather not.

Has anyone tried a setup like this?

No is the short answer. If the SB800 is off camera it can't use commander mode. I've checked the manual and that's what I see. However, there could be functionality that is not documented. I'd suggest putting this question on flickr on the strobist group. If it can be done, somebody there would know about it.

I don't own either of the SB-800 or SB-600 so take all this with a large grain of salt.

However, my understanding is at least one of these has a light trigger built in, so you could trigger one remotely with the PW and have the other trigger based on that first flash of light (assuming they can see each other, even if the camera can't trigger them.

You could get a SU-4 for the SB 600 which would allow it to fire when the 800 goes off. Handy little device if you own a SB-600

Don't spend the money - the SB-800 basically has this feature built in. So trigger the SB-600 with the PW, and have the SB-800 self-trigger?
