Okay, So I have to identical copies. Can I make one darker and then erase certain parts of the lighter one for more impact. Not creating new areas or shapes- just lighter ones. Thanks for any reply.

Yes as long as both were from the same original.

Yes, that's legal in advanced. Not in basic.

(Using two identical copies of the same image, two RAW conversions, stuff like that, but NOT two separate identical shots of the same scene at different exposures.)

for that you don't really need two copies, just an adjustment layer with a mask

What about using the different brushes with dodge and burn? Is that creating a new shape?

That's a tricky question to answer. In general, no, it's not creating a new shape, unless you do something like make a big smiley face in the sky with your dodging or burning, or create clouds or light rays where none were before. Does that answer it sort of?
