It is another day here in Queensland, Australia, and it is nice to wake up not so stressed without looking at my scores.
I think turning the scores off was a positive thing got me to do at this atage, and just enjoy the day, and the people on this site, without the strees of ..#3//#%4#.. scores.
Good morning to you all.....

But also know that your experience isn't uncommon.
I've had my second-best and second-worst scores going at the same time. Twice!
Earlier this week, I had a 6.3 and a 4.8 at the same time. |
Thankfully Jeffrey, you survived! LOL!! :)
Now, it's time for vacation-no??

Hang in there Shez! We've all been there...
Try to think about turning the negative into a positive. I went back to the location of my worst scoring shot (we're talking brown ribbon!) and I submitted a different angle & crop with different editing and it ended up being my highest scoring image (at that point). I learned a lot in the process too.
Keep up your amazing work - don't throw in the towel! You have such a distinctive and incredibly pleasing style that you would disappoint a lot of people - including yourself. =-)

I have really enjoyed the many side challenges, and seem to produce some of my best images during these times, so now trying to look at this a differant way, and in a differant light.
I will still enter challenges, but not unless it suits my style.
One of the reasons why I haven't done this, is that people may regonise my work, so I often try to do things a little diffferant, (thats when I seem to come upstuck) and then overprocess my images. That, and my sight problems, are the things that are letting me down.
Thanks everyone for your support, and YES, my scores are still turned OFF..... and will stay that way, until Sunday.... sooooooooooooo Peaceful.

Hey Sherpet - the dichotomy you have running is a best case scenario! The low scores mean you are still challenging yourself, and obviously, challenging the voters. And yet, you are technically skilled enough and can figure out how to please them (high score)- all at the same time. Congratulations! This is far more impressive than boringly consistent 6's, imo!
By the way, I too will sometimes turn off my scores - it makes my homepage feel 'calm'. Once you know what you want to do with your images, the scores are auxiliary.

I have one of my BEST scores to date, running alongside of two of my WORST..... SCORES.....
I want to dig a hole, and hide for the next week, until it is all over.
I feel like a complete idiot. I feel like I am totally loosing the plot.
Hopefully with my scores turned OFF for a few days, it will allow me to rethink my silly suggestion of retiring, and realize what I have done wrong, and hopefully get back on track..... I feel totally like a beginner. I been doing this now for two years, so really have no excuses.
The one thing that hopefully will keep me going, is that, I still LOVE photography and DPC, and everybody here.....
Just not two of my current entries in challenges.....
Oh! the shame..... the shame..... |
Most people have to put in many years of hard work to be able to retire, you are going to be able to achieve it in less then two years! Thats some impressive work, Congrats and enjoy your retirement!

I think the fact that you are letting the "scores" get to you means you are putting too much faith in them. Try looking at it like this: Imagine your photography as a life line, perfectly straight. Now imagine the opinions of ten thousand people, it would look like sign wave going all over the place. Sometimes the lines cross, and you receive a high score. Most of the time they don't. Just because your opinion of your work doesn't match someone else's, means nothing. Do what you like, in the end you are the only one you need to satisfy. And for gods sake keep using your camera, by your photos you obviously enjoy it. |

I wouldn't retire, I don't have much faith in the DPC pension plan, the free popcorn will only take you so far... :P
Shez, my advice is to put your emphasis on what you enjoy shooting and the comments that come from them and on occasion experiment out of your comfort level, but know the score you want may not always follow. If all else fails blame it on the trolls. I think that helps. :)

Sherpet...
Don't give up!!!
Heck...my scores are sucking big time in the last two challenges (urban landscape is my personal worst to date and I was kind of embarrassed by a comment someone made in the urban thread..lol)...but I'm not going to give up. You have only to look at your profile page to see the beautiful work you do! Many others see it too :).
I've only been on DPC for a little more than two months..so I am still trying to "learn the ropes". The most difficult thing that I have yet to understand is how some incredibly stunning images that get VERY high average votes and win ribbons can sometimes be voted 1-3 by some people. *shakes head..go figure!
Just do what you love to do Sherpet! Damn the torpedoes..full speed ahead.
The only thing that matters is if YOU like the photo!
Keep on clickin....

Just back for the bump and to make sure I don't have to bug you personally off line.
G'mornin' g'day, and nice to see you hangin' in there.
I was on the phone across the country to another DPC friend and during the discussion, we used one of your shots as an index for what we were referring to.....because it's a terrific shot and it made an impression on my friend (and me) so it was only natural to reference it.
If that doesn't tell you something, what will?.....8>)
BTW, we were wondering what this would be like desaturated.......could you give it a go?
The contrast looks like it would carry B&W quite well.

UPDATE..... Well silly me, I didn't realize that I could still see the comments given to my images during voting, when my scores are turned OFF.
Today I was reflecting on my two very poor entries in two of the challenges, and luckly one good one, and was surprised to see quite a number of comments on two of them,
One telling me the truth, re ovet proseccing the image.
By the way, I still have my SCORES turned OFF.....

This thread should be moved to the Personal Issues category or whatever it is. Fishing for sympathy is hardly a rant. |

Ignore. The thread. Ignore the thread. Thank you.
p.s. Sherpet, I like the B&W version of the flower - worked out very well! |

It is Sunday here in Australia, but decided to keep my scores off until tomorrow, just before rollover, at 2pm in the afternoon.
I have not been nearly as stressded, as I was with the scores on, and think I did the right thing turning them off. |
