I can't believe you started a thread to ask why this photo didn't do better. A submission such as this will never garner a decent score here at DPC. It was a terrible photo and a horrible subject. I am one of those who do not give out a good or mediocre score to make the submitter feel good. I tell it like it is and I gave you a 3. |

Left comment on desat version(venison?). Interesting story. NEVER be discouraged. (Possibly limited depth of focus: leg bones blurry when they should be more assertively contributing to the composition).

the photo is gross. what is so difficult about that? That said, gross can be fascinating. The macabre can be very enticing. An argument could be made for the abstract nature of roadkill, but I won't make it |

I find it funny that people get so offended by a dead decaying animal but it is ok to post pictures of handi-cap homeless people. just a thought. I forgot I put it in the nude gallery I will remove it I think I must have been in a smartass mood when I posted the picture.
I also find it amusing how some people express there thoughts. I was under the impression that the photograph discussion was to get more insight on a picture. I just wanted some more constructive views than what I got during the challenge. this thread wasn't ment for me to whine about my score. I didn't kill the deer I just came across it by accident when my car broke down. Alot people were I work live to hunt deer. the place closes down for a week when deer season starts. If they were open no one would show up. Deer turkey bear they all love to fill there freezers with em. Most of them would be upset by the picture because the deer wasn't in there freezer. I personally am not a fan of venision and I only hunt with my camera..... I did get some good tips from some people and I am thankful.

This critique is too ambiguous. What about the subject is horrible? What about the photo is terrible?
What happened here is that many people felt uncomfortable - even if they couldn't tell the subject, they most likely knew it was something dead. It doesn't have a sunset, clouds, and umbrella or beautiful saturated colors. Personally, I like photos that make me think about life, death, and the human influence on the planet. i also don't really mind having to look around to try to catch my center - but without the defining element to say "this is a ...." you are left somewhat empty. Thethe textures and colors are interesting though and I gave you a 13.

I was one of the people who scored this shot a 7. While I didn't particularly find the subject matter pleasant, I did feel that it had technical merit and certainly told a story. I thought the vignetting and almost selective deseat worked well and highlighted the gruesomeness of the image. I couldn't help but wonder how this little fawn died and at the wonders of nature. One thing's tragedy is another thing's lifeblood. |

To answer your question as to why it did bad?
Out of your 131 votes, 51.04% thought its below average (1-4 scores).
I think it is a fair number based on the content of your photo.
Technically, it wasn't that bad but photos of dead animals do not really appeal to a lot of people.
There are even those who pass-out when they see blood much more seeing (or even appreciating) something like this.
However, give yourself some credit as 48.85% of DPC thought that it deserves 5 or higher.
So half-empty or half-full?
It depends on how you perceive your score and numbers. ^_^
I hope that helps.
