Are 30 Gigawatt lasers harmful to the lens of your camera?

how about lasers in general?

Really depends what you want to make with your camera: these laser make nice tiny holes in almost any material, but without melting it. The material simply goes directly form solid to gas.
So the camera electronics will for sure be damaged when the laser hits it without a very good protection.

However, you will still have a camera, but it will be a pinhole camera :)

BTW: do you have access to such a laser?

Sure I like to know :)

I only have acess to some smaller laser 0.01 to 1 W, however, they are not pulsed but continous, so I do not want to look into their beam at all.
Maybe I use one of the smaller lasers for the upcomming challenge.

actually i have only access to a 10 Gigawatt laser at our local armory....but i can only use it on fridays (a very busy day for me) and i'm very hesitant to use it around my camera....for the upcoming challenge you know.....

What wavelength, i.e. Colour, is the light?

Let's see... 10 gigawatts is 10 billion watts. Is it one of those lasers they use for shooting down ICBM's from space and stuff? If so, I probably wouldn't use it anywhere near my camera.

10 gigawatts isn't anything like powerful enough for that sort of application - its probably something more like a phase amplified megawatt laser used for target designation. Also, while very high energy the pulses are typically very short duration, making the power
numbers seem a lot more impressive than they actually are.

Just FYI, there is a 500 terawatt laser at the
University of California Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (that's 500 trillion watts). however it is the size of a football stadium and can fire for about 25 nanoseconds as a sustained pulse.

Darn it, Gordon, now you've given away the light source I was gonna use for "Painting with Light!" Thanks a lot.

Now everyone will be using them. I'm going to use this instead. Not quite sure how best to control it though...
