But if the person feels their shot was good enough for the cover, then they have the right to use the 'yellow' border to bring that thought across. I have never voted down a shot based on border. A border has no bearing on the quality of the photography I am voting on.

"I have not voted down anyone for having a yellow border and I have no intention of doing so. I only vote it down if the YELLOW distracts from the beauty of the image."

Uh, come again?

AGAIN, Nation Geographic has a YELLOW BORDER!

Thanks for the biased vote!

Lighten up on the NATIONAL Geographic has a yellow border issue...last time I looked this challenge wasn't to create a magazine COVER but to create a photo that could appear in the magazine.

Actually I think it covers both as sometimes the cover shot also appears inside as well.

True but it isn't limited to just the cover as some would like you think.

From one who continuously complains about how the threads bias votes...where's the irony challenge when i need it?

i wanted to get a lip disc and tape a bone to my head, but Jacko made me promise not to enter man-boob pictures. Sorry Alan.

Sorry for butting in, but hasn't someone posted to other threads how they hate it when other members make statements that will cause the voting to become biased? Guess that "rule" should be followed in this challenge also.
Oter than that, good job everyone!

Hmmm... probably just as well...

I dont think it matters much what is said in the threads. People are gonna vote as they see fit. No one can do anything to stop or change that & nor should anyone be able to.

Big ups to crapp... for retracting a sort of "angry" post but I understand where he is coming from. I might have suggested it but thats all it would be- a suggestion.

For the most part, I think everyone knows that NG does the yellow border so most folks should be okay.

Good luck to everyone that entered. THe shots are really, really top notch. BTW, NG, on their website, has a gallery of unpublished shots. Would suggest some of the shots in this challenge be on that. They are that GOOD, IMHO.
Peace & LOVE everyone, I'm out!

The border can distract from the overall beauty of the image, impairing the quality of photo.

Would you not buy a NG if the shot on the cover clashed with the border? Come on get real here. This is a photo challenge and the contest was National Geographic. People will use the border the magazine uses and has used for many many years. Your logic isn't making sense to me.

It shouldnt matter, but unfortunately it has happened if you ever ask someone who has entered a shot that has been publically 'outed' in the forums based on someone's personal opinion about the type of shot, whether it be subject choice or other.

It happens, sure, nothing we can do to stop it, although we can still let our opinions be known. However, when people take the stance that it is bad for a collective shot type to be discussed in the forums because it concerns their picture only to do the exact same thing to other types is not exactly good form.

My comment at the beginning of this thread about the yellow border has nothing to do with how I vote. I made a comment last week about yellow borders in the forum and found it ironic how the first photo I opened up had a yellow border.

Looking through the shots this may be the challenge with the most gas used. Unless most of the subjects are in there backyards, it seems a lot of people traveled pretty far for their shots.

I cycled 12 miles there are back to get mine and it's bombing, lol. First time I've ridden my bike in donkey's years... and boy I'm feeling it today :P

I was gone for almost five hours, half of which was for driving. I was hoping for a decent score since I found my subject interesting but different. It's been a very rough start so far. Be lucky if I crack 5.5

I also did a lot of traveling too: 600 km (370 Miles)!

Luckily the travel was for business proposes and just had to point my camera here and there and I didn't have to pay for it.
However, I finally took something from a neighboring town.

The few shots I saw were awesome! I knew this was going to be a great one. Although intimidated, I entered and my shot's doing better than I had hoped (dare I say it??) Note on the comments - I've gotten very helpful ones so far. A few early voters have been studying and taking my shot in. I appreciate the time and comments!

There are some great shots in the challenge, it's a pleasure to vote.

I think though that some lucky ones are blessed with either exotic wild animals roaming around their back yards or stunning landscapes with dramatic weather conditions on the doorstep! So spare a thought for the others who have far more mundane environments to make do with (or have very little time to travel), and vote based on creative/technical/journalistic merits too, besides just the 'wow' factor.

stupid zoos... just kidding ;P

One thing I did notice is that that aren`t too many people in the shots.

NG always has lots of interestingly shot people-subjects in some of the anthropological-leaning articles.

I waited forever to have human subjects show up at my photo site, but hey, it was Sunday and I was shooting at a site where people work, so no luck. Lazy buggers ;P

I thought that in most cases, the yellow works as a border, given that NG has a yellow border on the cover around the cover shot regardless of how it "compliments" the shot.

FWIW, I typically don't like borders, but I don't vote on the border, I vote on the shot.

01/19/2004 11:04:27 AM · #46
I think yellow borders are not very nice, but on this occasion they are not affecting my vote at all. Usually a bad border ruins a nice image, but I can understand why some have opted for a yellow border.

As for not voting down on ay border, well to me it's all part of the picture. Safest option is not to have one if you can't accept the fact that some voters may score lower on border alone.

I've voted on about 1/3 of the entries so far and am Highly Impressed. Unfortunately, I'm also Depressed. I have not looked at my score yet, but I know that I will not finish high with all the great pictures in this contest. I agree that we may be looking at the highest winning score and highest average score with this challenge. I almost wish I'd missed the deadline with my entry (got it in at 10:59pm mountain time).

Congratulations to all.

There is a good side and a bad side to this challenge. The good side: I can't remember a challenge in which I have given so many sevens, eights and nines as this one. The quality is so high this time :). This brings me to the bad side: I now have an average score of around 7.3 and I fear this won't be enough to make it in the top three :(.

But all in all I must say I am stunned by so many photos; it is a true joy to watch them :).

The score must be really high to win, because really, I am sitting at the edge of a 6. For me, that is a HUGE deal, because one of my goals was to just break 5 sometime in the next 2 months. People are voting quite generously on this challenge, and rightfully so, there are a TON of absolutely beautiful shots.

Oh, just out of curiosity, who enjoys the Advanced Editing Rules? PErsonally, I think they are great because I think the vast majority of people understand the importance of a shot's integrity as a photograph. I have noticed a huge difference and some of these shots I have seen with the new rules have been nothing less than stellar.

National Geographic has to be one of the best I have seen in a long time (IMHO) There are some really grainy pictures that I scored high, just because of the composition of the photo. I cant wait to see the results. Good luck everyone! Aubrey
