I think it would be really useful to have some guidelines for photographic newbees. something along the lines of what they have at digitalphotocontest.com.

They call it 'Guide to photography' and is touted as a great quick review of what to look for when critiquing. Check it out and let me know what you think.

This is an excellent idea, and I have some ideas for it. If nobody objects, I'd like to submit an idea this, and BAMartin has agreed to help me with it.

If you could share with me any suggestions or useful links you have, that would be wonderful! Basically I intend to do a general guide to critiquing photos with some dp-challenge specific elements thrown in (such as what to do when you think a photo broke the rules or doesn't meet the challenge).

I know magnetic has a link or two with good info on critiquing ;)

Why don't you guys work together by AIM or e-mail or something... and if you want me to post versions to the site so others can help you review and add to it, just let me know. This would be a great addition.

Sounds good to me! I'll probably start working on this tonight, the IM name that I use from home is ClubJuggle (I'm PhillyJuggler at work).

I think someone suggested this a while back and I raised the issue again by asking for the URL for some school that talks about this. I'm glad someone is actually moving forward with it now. I feel I'm still a bit new to this and I have not had any sort of formal training so I don't know all technical details to write something like this. I noticed a few people included their AIM names on here. If anyone cares to chat I'm online most of the day. AIM username 'Chariot0'.

Just trying not to let this one die as a result of the server downtime.

Here's a link posted by Dangerous_blues just recently that might help as well.

Word is... Patella might be good to ask about this one...

And finally, if you need any help, my aim is drew8383.

Ummmmmmmmm....

What word is that???

LOL -- I''m perfectly happy to help. ICQ#=616612, Yahoo=jtniekamp, MSN=Patella321, I don''t use AIM anymore -- maybe I need to reinstall it.

Make sure to ID yourself as a dpchallenger -- I hate all the spam crap so have fairly tight "security" settings on em all.

Yes that's exactly what I was talking about. I think having this in the Learn menu or even somewhere accessible from the "vote" page.

Patella,

You may wish to try the Trillian program from www.trillian.cc if you are using all those chat clients.. I'm using it right now and I like it quite well... it manages all those clients under one roof....

Just install Trillian and you'll have 'em all.

Heh... looks like I'm about three seconds too slow. Must have been the extra time it took me to make the link.

Very well, thanks!

At first, I was having major battery life issues -- I was getting about 25-35 pictures per set of batteries (1600mAH NiMH batteries) per charge.

I did some research and picked up a negative pulse charger to see if that would make a difference, and it did. I got 150 shots from my last charge, plus three sets of downloads straight from the camera.

Being an SLR-type camera, the autofocus is a little slow (which is typical). When I need a quick response from the camera I switch to manual focus, or just push the shutter halfway down to set the focus ahead of time and wait for my shot. As long as the camera is already focused, the lag time is very low. I'm also suprised at how quickly I've become comfortable operating the camera manually, especially since this is the first non PHD (Push Here, Dummy) camera I've ever owned.

The battery life is really the only problem I ever had with the camera, and since buying a better charger solved the problem, I'm really quite happy with it.

I get excellent life from my Sony DSC-F707 Lithium Ion batteries... I get about 2 hours of shooting time... I got an extra battery when i got the camera and haven't really needed it yet... I run out of memory stick ( two 128mb sticks) before i run out of battery in most cases...

How can I find one that will work on my Nikon's batteries? The only stuff I found via a Google search seemed to be very expensive and made for cell phone or laptop batteries.

I'm not sure... Youi might want to try ebay, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is expensive for a custom battery. Keep in mind though, that in many cases a camera will take AA NiMH batteries even if it comes with a custom battery.

In my case, I use AA batteries, and I got the charger at Radio Shack (I needed it right away) for about $34.

I keep three sets of batteries and two chargers in constant rotation. There's three of us using the same camera for these challenges.
