Yup. It doesn't stop screen captures, so we are back to 2 keypresses to steal the image. |

Two keypresses then editing the image to remove all the bullshit around it (unless you have the pretty effin sweet little program FastStone Capture).
I think until we can actually perform a user study we'll just have to agree to disagree that implementing a couple of relatively easy safeguards would or would not have a positive impact on reducing image theft.
How much it would reduce it is another debate but I'd feel safe betting 50% reduction.

To be honest, just from seeing other stolen stuff on here, and reading the profiles of the people who steal it and such...I have a feeling none of them are going to print screen and cut and paste, crop, resave, upload just to post a picture to say it is theirs.
But again, to the extreme.
I bet its Bill Gates stealing pictures and he is using alt.hax0rz mad l33t skillz to do it. |

Brad suggested that there's potentially hundreds of dollars riding on protecting these images - if they are worth that much, then surely someone could learn how to use the crop tool.
If there isn't anything riding on it, why sweat it ?
I'd rather not do completely ineffectual things that prevent no barrier to theft, while annoying legitimate users. Security theater is just a farce. It's bad enough in the airports without starting it here.

When you upload to the internet you automatically grant every person the right to download it to their computer. I'm not sure everyone realizes this. If you don't want people to have the photos on their computer simply don't upload to an unsecured web site such as this. Preventing people from fullfilling a right you granted them hardly seems like the way to go to stop improper usage. |

What about us sharing photos with each other?? The whole, "How would you have edited this?" thread would be gone.
We would never be able to teach or learn by the examples or tutorials of others. DPC is a learning site right??
The whole idea is to be able to go get the photos of your peers or idols and study what they have done and what kind of setups they use and try to use that knowledge when you are shooting for yourself or try to duplicate their amazing photoshop work yourself so you learn a thing or three :) |

I certainly hope that you mean that in a "practical" way. That is to say that if you put it on the web, someone can steal it. No one has the "right" to put an image on their computer they take from the web. (and yes I realize that if it appears on your screen it is likely in some obscure temp file somewhere if you really want to find it, but we are talking intentionally here) |

Perhaps we have different definitions on stealing. I define stealing as taking ownership of something that isn't yours to begin with. Downloading something off the internet that was made available to all is not stealing, intentionally or not. |

I think (after reading ALL of this thread) that we are all pretty much in agreement that there is no way to entirely prevent someone from stealing an image. Throughout this thread the expression "if you can see it you can steal it" came up a few times.
I think that making it a little bit harder to steal pictures from here will help. We'll never get rid of the problem entirely but if we can get rid of the casual idiots like the person who stole Larus image (great Shot by the way!) we can prevent some theft. Right now we have nothing. I like the idea of the transparent gif. It prevents outright right clicking and saving. I guess another option would be to put a semi transparent grey layer on top of it until the mouse is over the image. That way when the person goes to print screen it they'll have a mouse pointer in the screen shot which they'll have to edit out. (Unless they alt-printscreen of course). This won't remove the ability to view source and get the image but oh well.
The bottom line? We can't prevent image theft so lets contructively come up with a way of deterring it. Aside from burning down people's houses...(which I might be in favor of too)

My opinion: It does not matter. It is actually a compliment when someone steals your image and claims it as there own. We (DPCers)
enjoy finding the thiefs. Bad mouthing them and causing them to disappear, close down there site and comback as someone else to start all over again. Its a big game.

It might not be for you but there are plenty of people who use it as one. |
I'd be one! For example: Look at my "Registration Date Apr. 30th 2007 vs Total Images Viewed: 4,993"!! There's not too many people that are that bad.
I look at others' images and am inspired and encouraged by them. I have even looked at several pictures multiple times because I'm totally drawn to the image (congrats to those photographers with that capability).
