I'm glad that you and they are ok.
Very nice work on the photos.

I actually had a much more composed image of the undertow sign but it didnt turn out. Go figure. Look at my lens :) Its the quantaray in my profile. What a pile. There were SO many people there watching though. It was incredible.

I think it came out perfect. It's really the context that makes that shot! Glad you and your friends are all ok.

This shot is great. With so much going on everyone is focusing on the collapsed bridge when right next to it is that incredible sight. Personally after that, the last place I'd want to be is standing on a bridge with a hundred other people packed that tight.
I hope everyone is accounted for quickly, so that the healing can begin. |

ok, creepy moment. I had a dream last week theat I was on a bridge that collapsed while I was on it. I'd never been on it before and it almost looked exactly like this (except for the metal support beams, looked more like the san mateo bridge where I live). Ok, creepy moment over.
This is just horrible, I hope there are less dead than they expect. I am always nervous going across bridges because I'm worried about something like this happening. I have to drive across a 9 mile bridge that goes over the water tomorrow :(

These are some of the images I was able to capture of the I35W Bridge Collapse. I was working in the area, however was not able to make it to the site until 8ish. By that time the police had started pushing the crowd back from the scene, and I was not able to get close. Which, is understandable. The images are not the greatest There was a storm brewing to the North West that was blocking the sun and making it hard for quality pictures.
Hope all is well for those involved and a many thanks for emergency crews and bystanders that helped. |

Its my home turf. I know all the nooks and crannies of where to go, and where not to. If only I had the 70-200 f2.8L that I am getting hopefully soon. I will post pictures tomorrow when I go down again to cover the effort of cleanup. Hopefully by then I will have my tripod. |

this really gives an interesting perspective. i really like this shot... you can feel the tension, it seems like it's unimaginable, you get a feel for the whole scene. well done, especially under the circumstances.

I agree. Very well stated.
My thoughts and prayers to those families and friends in mourning, and to those who experienced this tragedy first-hand. I can't imagine... |

the perimeter of any place that could see the bridge is locked down nice and tight today. My fiancee really wanted to see it just to get an idea of the true magnitude but there wasnt any way to see it. We will see what happens tomorrow. |

Anyone have trouble getting around Minneapolis today?
I'm a bus rider and mostly run up and down Lake St (30 blocks away or more) but the buses were horrid! Could be construction, but also highway 35 traffic routed through the city. |

No problems here, I don't go into downtown though. It didn't really seem to affect traffic on 694 east or west, which was surprising. My mom takes the bus in from the suburbs and said that 94 was far more open than she expected.

I was up and down Lake St which seemed okay except for construction. 94 was a little more crowded than I expected and the line to exit on 35E North was backed up forever. |

I really wonder how much of that was due to people just staying away for the most part. The weirdest thing in the world is taking the last little part of 35w south after the bridge but before you get to i94. It is like one of those movies in which the person wakes up and they are the only person left on the earth. There is just no one there. I figured next time I can just stop right in the middle of the road, get out, take some pictures, and drive away again. |

For the lazy. 2 years to build a new bridge sounds very very ambitious to me. That and the delay put on other projects (35E/694 interchange) is going to be pretty big. I HATE driving through 35E/694 every day, it takes me a good 30-40mins to go ~3-5 miles, bah.

This event has pretty much dropped off the news now. Last week, in the NTSB news briefing that was carried live (when it was still "news"), the briefer mentioned that they had four videos of the collapse in progress. Only one had been shown on the news. Does anybody know of any other videos that have made it into the blogsphere/youtube/www? |

Still dominating the local news. Mostly heartwarming stories about all the nice people involved.
Crawling traffic on the bridge kept fatalities down.
The bridge design itself cushioned the fall, kept a lot of the road surface and cars above the water level.
They are preparing to let people get their stuff out of their cars & make arrangements to get the cars back.
Traffic cameras were pointed away from the bridge, towards downtown, when it fell.
Don't know how much of this made the national news. |

I heard they were turned off for the road work that was being done. They might not be releasing any other videos for investigation purposes.
