Just dropping a quick note in case anyone thinks the National Geographic challenge should only have iamges in portrait format.
The challenge clearly states that the images to be submited are the type found in the magazine. That means that they can basically be any shape that is printed within the magazine: portrait, landscape, square, etc.
This gives us more lattitude for shot composition.
To conclude, I don't have a @% idea what to submit yet! Hope I get a good day without any snowfall.

Shoot a lot! :)
I read in the NGC 100 best photo's ever, that it is very normal to shoot 10,000 photo's for one article! Let's assume they use 15, we can get away with 650-700 photo's to choose a submission from. Hmm, for some people that is usual. :)

i suspect we will get lots of landscape, portrait & animal shots. To be honest, those are the only ideas I have had too. Nothing solid but just thinking about what NG is & the shots I remember being in them.
On another thread, someone wrote that anything that is photojournalism which I have been harping on for a bit. I, too, am worried about the weather as it is supposed to be butt cold here in NYC from now until the end of the weekend. Dunno what to do. I hate to sit out a great challenge but I might be forced to.

It is also about cultural and historical objects, street photography, technique /science (they did 100 years of flight 2 months ago, B2 bomber on the frontpage). The problems in the world, like war, oil, water, melting icecaps, changing climates, food shortage.
But most of it is with a photojournalism intent, so no studio shot of a melting block of ice from the fridge and then call it "global climate change".

I agree. Get out there and shoot something interesting in your local environment. This is almost as wide open as December Free Study. Go crazy.

I was watching something on the NGC a couple of days ago - one of their photogs was on assignment photographing grizzly bears, in Alaskan towns, going through trash cans and also out on the ice floes. He was there for 2 weeks and went through 628 rolls of 36 exp film - that's over 20,000 shots for a final 16 that got printed |

Sounds like someone should introduce him to Digital Photography! :-) Although I suspect he didn't pay for the 628 rolls personally it's still a massive expense for somebody... An expense that would purchase a fairly nice digital setup.

The flight story where they flew with the military was done entirely with digital. Partly for the speed, and partly so the military could review their shots for sensitive content.
