Just posted a forum in 'Rants' and thought it might be better to allow the person who started it to close the forum when they wish. There have been several forums which have gotten out of hand and think it would be better for the site to assist with forum moderation and also just to stop having to many out of control or unused forums building up.

How does one post a forum?
07/25/2007 02:07:08 AM · #3
If someone is violating the Forum Rules you can report the posts, just like any other user, and we will review them and take appropriate action. In general, though, our philosophy is that the original poster (OP) does not have any special "ownership" rights to the thread. We won't lock a thread just because the OP doesn't like the direction the discussion is going or no longer wishes to participate in it -- there have to be actual rule violations that warrant the lock.

This is news to me.

When did this change of policy take place?

I never really thought of it as a "change of policy" really. It started because we had a series of cases where someone started a thread and didn't like the opinions posted in it, or didn't like the fact that other people thought they were wrong about whatever they said, so wanted to have the thread locked to effectively censor the discussion.

I should have added "generally speaking" to my previous post, because undoubtedly there are exceptions, but if a discussion is active, constructive, and benefiting the community as a whole, we are usually not inclined to censor it.

OK thanks for the reply just wanted to verify really. But think it might still be good to have the option on the rants section at least. My rant wasn't inflammatory but after the recent spate of religious forums getting out of hand I was surprised to notice immediate deletion was no longer an option.

From an end-user standpoint, it never has been. No one other than Site Council and Administrators have ever had access to the "hide thread" or "hide post" function.

As to actually "deleting" a post from the server, not even Site Council has the ability to do that. We were able to back in 2002, but the interface to do so was removed at our own request -- the theory being that hide is reversible, but delete isn't.

EDIT: Oh, and you haven't seen anything until you've survived DPC in a Presidential election year.

ROFL! That's when they temporarily rename the site to fightclub.com

OK understood, haven't started many forums so wasn't so clear on details.

By the way, a 'thread' is what you start, not a 'forum'. A forum is an area like 'General Discussion', or 'Hardware and Software'

That's very different from how my observations of past threads.

Typically, the OP would get upset, ask SC for the thread to be locked and BOOM! Thread locked. Despite ongoing topical discussion.

Not that I don't think the new way isn't an improvement. I always did question the bizarre notion that the OP in a thread on DPC was somehow given special "threadlocking" consideration.

That generally only happens if the thread has strayed far off-topic from the original post or if the thread has outlived its usefulness (such as a "for sale" item that's no longer available).

As I said, it's a welcome change.

I believe that thread was a catalyst, if not the catalyst, for the SC discussion and eventual change.

Indeed as I recall it was. Prior to that thread, I think we *did* tend to lock more often at the request of the OP, though as CJ stated, certainly not always.

That was a fun thread and a gentle reminder that I still haven't tried tofu tacos :-)
