DANG! AAAAAAARRRGH! Just went from a 6.0 to a 5.3 in 2 votes!!!
Probably because of people with averages such as this.
Votes Cast: 1,272
Avg Vote Cast: 3.8703
Votes Received: 1,148
Avg Vote Received: 5.2178

These kinds of voters scare the HELL out of me. This challenge just tanked!

Maybe I am odd..but there were many photos I voted in the 7-10 range. Three I gave a 10 because I thought they were spectacular!

I knew it wasn't going to be good. Didn't notice Basic Editing until after I took my pictures , but submitted anyways (needed to selective desaturate and clone out a line). But it's fun anyways. Especially to read my one comment.

"Flower shot. DNMC"

I know who you are. Look forward to many 1's and 2's and 3's. Seriously, READ THE CHALLENGE TITLE. Still. Life. Flower, moving, no. Alive, yes. Duh.

//dictionary.cambridge.org/define.asp?key=78163&dict=CALD

"still life noun [C or U] plural still lifes
a type of painting or drawing of an arrangement of objects that do not move, such as flowers, fruit, bowls, etc:
"

Unless someone wants to come up with an actual description of the challenge next time, give people a break.

I must say, the moaning and groaning did get me to go vote. I figured I'd either add to the misery or help pull a few back from the edge of the abiss. I don't think I pulled very many back though and a few I wanted to give just enough of a nudge to help it on over the edge. I don't know what some of you were thinking, smoking or drinking. LOL!

I did leave a few comments and I even went back and took another look and shifted some of my scores on the second look. A few rated a 10, a couple were close, but not many of them were worth a 10 in my opinion. But then none rated a 1 either, so it evens out. ;)

Mike

Please cease and desist from voting those non "still-life" forms so high! You're killing my score. I was comfortably dropping into the high 3's, descending into DPC cellarland. And now look at this pathetic score:

If this entry does not have fruits/cheeses/wine bottles, please give us a break and score it a 3 or less!

Dude, I started out with a 7.0000 and have been steadily declining ever since with a shot I'm *REALLY* pleased with that I know should be DPC friendly and this is where I am.

I'm super disappointed with the score, and have even contemplated withdrawing it.......and then I saw that I got a favorite.

I will never understand the vagaries of the voting, but when someone likes your shot so much that they give you a fave, then you've made it with that shot.

I still think my score is a crime, though!.......8>)

If you got 2 faves, I really wonder what it is that you think you need from this entry.

Ya gotta get a perspective, guy!

Down a lil bit from yesterday.

Now, from what I was just reading in this thread based on comments or votes from other users, I thought I would post my stats (i'm a nice guy voter) ;)

Challenges Entered: 2
Votes Cast: 5,958
Avg Vote Cast: 7.6964
Votes Received: 469
Avg Vote Received: 5.2857

I normally would only vote a 4-5 if it is a very poor looking photo (cell phone quality kind of thing). Otherwise its a seven or eight's. Nine's if it stands out and 10's if it really shows it's beyond all others.

Having watched my scores and this forum thread over the past two days, I'm wondering.....

Do some people go through the entire challenge and rate everything a "4", for example? And, then go back and adjust from this arbitrary baseline? Doesn't seem to be an efficient voting method, but what do I know. Can anyone explain this phenomenon?

OK..I'm going to throw in my two cents here on the voting process.
When I look at an image I look at the Composition, Exposure, Lighting, Color, Focus, POV, DOF, Background..etc. Then I look at the overall image. Does it evoke emotion? Is it pleasing to look at? Is the image in keeping with the "spirit" of the challenge in their choice of submission? Lastly...were the rules followed. Just because I don't happen to personally like a certain type of image doesn't mean I am automatically going to give it a low score but I give high marks to the images that IMHO embody all of the above. There are many wonderful photographs in every challenge (which put my image to shame btw).
I go through and vote all images based on my first impression. I go back and look at them again, which is easier since they are grouped by score, and adjust my vote accordingly. Most of the time the score doesn't change more than 1 point one way or the other but the cream usually rises to the top.
I have heard from other DPCers that entering a "floral" image can pretty much guarantee a lower score based on the subject matter. That people intentionally submit "bad" images in their quest for the Brown ribbon and that images submitted to challenges may not be as anonymous as they would appear. Also...that people will automatically vote an image down if they have seen it in a thread or in a portfolio before.
When I browse through photos in "recently commented on", in the galleries or happen upon them in a thread...I look at how the image was voted. I sometimes don't understand how an image could get votes so low but I guess that's the nature of the beast. Peer review is tough.
Would I like to someday win a ribbon? Sure! Who wouldn't? Is it going to happen for me? Probably not...but that's not why I joined DPC. I joined to learn from the people here. To improve my skills. I thought about not entering any more challenges because my first two received average marks but then I reconsidered. I wouldn't be challenging myself if I gave up.
Maybe someone...or a group of people...could get together and write a tutorial on voting? I know I personally would be interested in seeing it. The tutorial was helpful to me on giving and receiving comments.
Anyway...that's my two cents.
