Some from the FB game I shot tonight. Out in Shiprock, pretty crappy light but I just used flash as always. It wasn't a very impressive game, so I didn't get anything great. Got a mountain bike race tomorrow, then some anniversary party at a rich guy's ranch, then hopefully some more soccer if I get my stuff edited in time to go along.

ahhhg, i am so far behind in this thread :(

anyways, on top of everything else i've been shooting, i was hired by the washington wizards to shoot their scrimmage tonight (it was the conclusion of a 5-day training camp they held in richmond this week). i've got 1000+ images to weed through, but these are the ones i gave them immediately after the game tonight.

these were all shot in tv mode at 1/320 iso1000 with my 70-200; the aperature ran between f/2.8 and f/5.6.

eta: image quality at the moment is low, as these are edits/resizes of websized images ;-)

Now that voting has ended, I can post football from the 29th.

First loss of the season. Wouldn't you know it would happen at homecoming. At least the Bills won the next day (right across the street)!

This is what happens when there is another photographer in the gym who has two 800ws strobes mounted in the gym and is bouncing them off the ceiling. About 15% of my photos from this event look like this...

See, you need to figure out what channel he's using, get the same trigger he has, and poach them suckas.

These are by no means recent. I posted them to a different thread about fucusing techniques in sports photography. Thought I would share them here. I don't get a chance to shoot major sports much anymore, but it was my passion as a photojounalist in the 90s

My first field level college game (I've covered high school from the sidelines). I was focused on my brother and another local player for shots for the local paper (as they got me the field pass). Arrowhead Stadium is amazing from the sidelines, I can't imagine it being filled to capacity with Chiefs fans! I am looking forward to being on the field up at Maryville for their Homecoming game, and hopefully in Florance Alabama if they make their third appearance in the NCAA D-II National Championship game in as many years...which reminds me, I better reserve a 300mm 2.8 for that day! Clouds moved through the whole day, making me have to look at the sky before each play and adjust my EV from 0 to +1/3, +2/3.

Went out to the race track last saturday. just as the sun came up, heavy cloud cover. Shot these at 1600 iso, very limited processing. Hadn't shot at that iso for a long time, back ground pretty noise. Any tips?

I think you did well, and your timing was excellent.

Thanks!!. shot at 500/640speed f2.8 1600iso. havent used my sigma 70-200 f2.8 in long time, it came in handy. I think the key to high iso is getting the expsoure right on. Do you agree?

Wow... I don't know nuttin' 'bout shootin' horses. But I say, ya got some mighty fine images there! I really like the ones where the horse and rider are sharp but there's enough blur in the horse's feet to get a sense of "speed".

Well done!

Thanks....really had a good time....First time I every shot horse racing. My father inlaw is big time horse guy. He's the one that got me in to see the training seasons.

Couple from today. All day tournament, learned that extreme settings will make your keeper rate drop. Shot today at 1/400 3200 ISO and F2.0 with a prime. Its alot tougher to shoot with a prime then a zoom, and its also harder to hit dead on focus at F2.0 then at F2.8.

I shot a High School Football game yesterday. The schools here don't throw the ball that often so it is hard to get images of them trying to catch. they prefer to run the ball continually. They are also not very big schools, so most of the players play ironman and never seem to come off the field.

Here is a link to the page. I would love some feedback from some of you that do this more often.

Thanks

True--but I almost never shoot horses wide open. Well, not never, when I shot for Cavalia it was all indoors, theatrical light, and I had to shoot wide open to get any kind of shutter speed. Sure would like to try that again with the Mk III whic his usable at 3200 instead of the noise of the 20D! Depends on the angle. 3/4 from the front, I want the rider's face in focus as well as the horse, and tend to shoot around 4.0 when I can. For racing if not panning I'd want to make sure the speed is at least 640, unless motion blur is the goal (and boy is that fun.) Cool about your father in law; nobody in my family is into horses.

Shot the usual Friday Night Football last night. I decided to go without the flash for most of the game so that I would be free to use the drive mode and try to learn when the best moments happen by looking through the sequences later, rather than just shooting one in the middle with the flash and hoping for the best.

Well, ISO 3200 with the 1D is pretty crappy. It does show up in newsprint, especially if you have to pull the exposure up. But I say a little noise never hurt anybody, as long as it doesn't envelop the subjects :p

It was a ridiculously unmatched game. Aztec won 78-0, with 50 of the points being scored in the first quarter. On Shiprock's field.

Today, I shot some rugby. Awesome game, so much better than football to shoot. How can I make it the staple high school sport around here? Any ideas? I love how they play it without padding and helmets, so the action is so much more personal while it's still rough and fast.

Also went along to a rodeo, but the light in there was terrible and I don't feel like working the shots tonight.

Here are some from the rodeo. It was the New Mexico State Finals, so I guess the competitors were pretty good.

Those dudes are pretty crazy, in any case. We shot two events - one of them, they chased a steer with their horse, jumped off the running horse onto it and wrestled it to the ground. The other one, they got on a horse that should be shot instead of ridden and got thrown off and stomped on, or thrown into a concrete wall. And they do this for fun?

I caught somebody else's flash in one of those. It actually happened twice at that event.

Just a few from tonights game.

Can anyone see why I posted the middle shot? I sent the same quiz to my editor to see if he notices. I converted a couple of these to B&W to see how they will look in print.

I don't get the middle one. Looks like it was a pretty muddy field, though.

How are you liking the old school 1D so far?

Here's some of my stuff from tonight. It wasn't too visual of a game, and of course I was on the wrong side of the damn field when the good action happened. Used my 70-200 f4 this time, since I didn't want to drive all the way into the office and grab the 2.8 and then turn around and come back to the field, and back.

It was kind of funny, all of the good action shots I got had Cuba's #25 in them. I looked for some others since I was supposed to do up two for tomorrow, but couldn't find any...

Oh, and one of the shots I took two weeks ago of all the players lined up before the game ran on A1 today. The reason why; the team ended the season early because of too many injuries. This was the one that lost 78-0 last week. Just goes to show that it's worth shooting non-action pictures at the games sometimes.

Actually the field was throwing dust up its so dry here its unreal. The middle one if you look at #38 you will see the ball hitting his left arm. He blocked the field goal try and his teammate ran it back for a touchdown.

Some soccer.

I used the paper's 1D today as well as mine, and it was so nice to have the wide angle ready to go when the action got near the goal. I need a second body of my own eventually.

Oh, and here's a skateboarding shot from yesterday that I forgot to upload. The kid is only 10 but he kicks ass.
