ETA I'd take that shot with flash in ETTL-1 to -1 2/3 and you would get some awesome detail on that shot of the rider and bike.

Having just seen motorcyclists doing the same thing here in Salt Lake last week ... I'm thinking that, for the rider to be getting up off of his seat like that ... I bet he is something like 30-40-50 feet in the air. I don't think the flash is going to do much at that distance competing against sunlight.

Shot some football last night, then motocross, soccer and volleyball today.
Football - apparently the guest team, Silver City, is the best in the state and Kirtland hasn't been very succesful for quite a while, but this game they kicked ass.
The two photos we used, incidentally the only two worth using that I got from the game... I'm getting better at it but I'm still far from being good, it's just hard to shoot well.
Motocross - There were all of 6 racers with quads who raced today; tomorrow is the big event with bikes.
Soccer - we used these two shots for the front page of the sports section tomorrow:
Some others:
Volleyball - Wasn't too happy with the shots I got, it's kind of tough to shoot and make it look good. I came to the conclusion that shooting from the stands was a good idea, but it would be better with long glass and shooting really tight. Both of the photos we used are actually from ground level...
Oh, and I applied for a membership to sportsshooter without a sponsor, and they accepted my portfolio, so here's my page:

For those of you who are shooting sports regularly, you might want to set yourself up to offer prints to the people you are photographing...
Exposure Manager
This is my referral link to Exposure Manager. It costs $100 per year, but you can get a $5 discount with that link.
This site allows you to quickly and easily offer your photos to prospective buyers. You don't have to upload the full resolution print in the beginning either. You can upload a small version first, and when a customer buys the print, you get an email requesting that you send the full resolution file at whatever size the customer purchased.
The $100 annual subscription would pay for itself very quickly if you are selling prints, and the company only takes a 10% cut off the top of your sales. It's the best deal and most versatile site of everything I looked at when I researched this. I looked at Printroom, ExposureManager, and SmugMug.
Check it out...

Thanks for the tip John. I use smugmug for my wedding work and we (partner and I) use PhotoReflect for sports. Exposure Manager looks pretty interesting from both perspectives!

Some great captures. I'm impressed with everyone's arena and court shots. Great info, too. Thanks.

I took John's advice and his referral link a few weeks ago. While the site has a couple of little glitches I have been using it for a few weeks now, and I'm comfortable enough with it, that I'm going to start "pimping" my site and go live with it this week or next. I still have a couple of kinks to work out in my marketing. What I like about it is that it can be setup to be transparent so people dont think your on smugmug, shutterfly, or even exposuremanager.
Site link yes I know my front page sucks for now, I'm trying to find someone to build me a very simple front page its just there for a referral.

John has a sports shooting tutorial on his site, or did at one time. I'd suggest contacting him for the information.

I got to shoot at UBC's Day of the Longboat this weekend, and I got to use a friends Nikon D70s and massive 70-200 2.8 VR. Needless to say, I will be buying that lens as soon as I have a Nikon body of my own to mount it to!
Going back to shoot the finals in 2 hours, and theres a heavy rainfall warning in effect. Sounds like fun!

I would if I could, but I cant afford to run two systems, unfortunately. I need to sell my kit to finance the transition!
I'd get a D300 over a D2H/X, also. In all the sports shooting I've done, I've never found myself wishing I could machine-gun shoot anyways. As long as I dont have to worry bout filling the buffer, 3-5fps is all I really need...

Took a WA approach at the end of tonights volleyball assignment. Canon 16-35 at 16mm right at the edge of the court. Essentially unedited as I still dont have my desktop back together, replacement MB arrives tomorrow.
