Just curious, I know the Sony F717 has a 58mm lens thread. Does that mean any 58mm lense will fit? Just curious...I'd like to learn.
I'm looking to purchase different lenses and filters. Any recommendations appreciated as to where to buy and what to buy...
Thanks,
Renee

I've found circular polarizer and ND2 filters..but nothing great. I would like an ND400 made by Nikon that will fit the 717..but can't find it anywhere. I am thinking of going out to get some multiplier lenses next.. an X2, X4, X10.

Yes a 58mm lens will fit. The thread on the front of the camera is 58mm. That means polarizers and other filters at 58mm will work with the camera.

All I have found for my camera is ND filters, and circular polarizer. The ND400 was a special order, and I was told that the price would be well over $300.00! So...I decided to just stack filters and adjust camera settings, and try to shoot in lower light when possible.

Technically, for your fixed lens camera, you want to use a conversion lens that attaches to the front of your existing lens. This may have been what you meant but I wanted to clarify. I use a 52mm wide angle conversion lens for my F707 and I have to use a step-up ring to make it fit my camera and it works fine. It's best if you can fnd the exact sized conversion lenses and filters but slightly different sizes can still work as long as you don't see them at the outter edges of your image. With your F717 the actual lense elements are smaller then the 58mm thread size enabling the use of many 52mm conversion lenses and filters.

By "lense" you probably mean 'filter'. Any 55 mm filter should work. The high quality filters (B + W, Heliopan) are also available as 'slim' filters (without an outer thread). These you will not be able to stack. You may not wish to stack too many. A UV filter does not diminish light (stackable), others do (stackable, if you don't mind loosing an f-stop or two).
Be conservative in your use of filters. While some are very useful (i.e. UV and polarizer), many don't do anything you can't do in Photoshop, and the more glass you pack between the sensor and your subject the lower your image quality, as a rule.
You do not need a circular polarizer for the F717, although it won't hurt to use one.
