I'm looking to get a Pentax camera as my new DSLR.
I'm NOT interested in frame rates, iso performance above 1600, pro build quality, a sensor larger than 6mp... none of that really matters. Any entry level DSLR will fill the role in these regards.
What I am interested in is a camera with nice, bright viewfinder that can be used with good results when using MF lenses, and one that won't bust my tiny budget (about $400 bucks).
I've read through all the DPreview stuff, etc..., what I'm looking for is some feedback from users who may be doing the same--MF with a Pentax DSLR. I'm especially interested to here from folks that have used both the *ist cameras with the pentaprism finders, and the K series with the pentamirrors, and how they stack up against one another with regards to MF.
btw, I use a Hoada split screen finder on my 300D now, but frankly, getting it shimmed up to work worth a hoot was a PITA. So viewfinder focussing out of the box is a prime concern.
Any input appreciated.

looks like you're describing either the k100d or k110d. The biggest difference is the anti-shake reduction in the 100, but not the 110. It works pretty well and allows handheld shots down to 1/20 or better, depending on how steady your hands are. I've been real happy with the k100d.
ETA: I use it with several old 35mm manual focus lenses with no problem (as well as AF in MF mode), and viewfinder is very bright. Even with MF, the autofocus lock will give you a visual indicator that you're in focus

Thx for that input EE.
The new purchase field has been reduced to the k100 and the *istDS (I should have stated that up front, but I could always try and buy used).
Of course, besides differences in the way they process images--K100 seems better in this regard, the viewfinders are mirror(k100) vs. prism(*istDL).
I considered the k110 but they don't seem to offer any price cut over the k100 when buying new--not to mention being harder to find. B&H doesn't even seem to sell them! So hey, why not get the shake reduction? It's not a big issue for me, but I may like it more than I think I will :) |

The K100D/K100D Super both have ISO 3200, sadly the K10D limited to ISO 1600? Either way the K110D can still be obtained new but whats weird is the K110D has disappeared from Pentax's main listing not sure if its been dropped since the K100D Super came out and they're listing both.... |

The K110D has indeed been dropped. As one can imagine, Shake Reduction is a key feature that attracts people to Pentax, so the K110D never sold well.
Now that the K100D Super has been announced, I would expect to see the K100D take a price drop (although you can already get it below 400 US). The VF is a little small, but quite good for a pentamirror from what I understand. The K10D VF is much larger, but above your price range. I know very little about the *ist models, so I cant be of any help there...
Ive heard that katzeye focusing screens are fairly easy to install on pentax cameras...
hope that helps |

I would suggest the K100D for their shake reduction...
