Buy an Unlocked phone, the only reason they lock them is to prevent you from buying this limited edition phone from Cingular and Using it on T-Mobile.
Its actually illegal in some countries and in the US its sort not but they have their waya roudn it by offering to unlock it. As far as the competition thing goes its not an unfair business trade. Some phones it doesnt matter like the T-Mobile sidekick wont function on CIngular even though its GSMN at best itll make phone calls but Cingular doesnt have access to the Danger Servers that make the phone work.

I've got a bucket full of them. Spain is the only one that locks phones over here, and 25 Euros will get that fixed. I think I have 3 Quad band phones at the moment, all wide open.
So, who needs a phone?

I just got done with an hour and a half on the phone with Sprint including 30 minutes on hold in the queue (2 times for 15 minutes each) and getting hung up on for using profane language. "Damn" is profane? The FCC doesn't think so. It's not scatological.
Makes me want to puke.

I'm so surprised I haven't gotten one of these letters since I recently sent Sprint a lettr that started, "Dear Sprint, You suck..."
I never had a minutes problem with Sprint when I was on an individual plan, but the minute I switched to the family plan I've had nothing but problems. They've screwed up my bill six times. WRONGLY cut off my phone four times (bill had long been paid). I once even threatened to sue them. They asked me for what, and I told them that I signed a contract agreeing that I would pay them X-dollars every month, which I do. In return, they are supposed to provide me with good service, which they don't. They're in breach of contract. I recently talked to a woman who said once she switched the the Buisness plan she's had nothing but trouble with Sprint. They keep cutting off individual phones.
The unfortunate thing is I really don't think any of them are any better. A week after I had my last screaming match with Sprint, I heard my boss having a screaming match with Verizon. Honestly, when I heard the idiotic thing that Verizon did, I was almost glad to be with Sprint.
My thing with Sprint right now is that their phone selection stinks. Other provider have a much wider selection. I want a phone with either a qwerty keyboard on it, or just individual keys for the alphabet. My boyfriend is Deaf. I used 275 out of 700 minutes last month. 250 of them were spent messaging him. Instant Messaging on a standard phone gets kind of tedious. |

Someone on another message board is saying they received a cut off from Sprint, and he only called Customer (I Don't)Care ONCE this past year! He said after being hung up on, transferred too many times to count, and put on hold for hours at a time that he swore at the customer service rep.
I think I better look at the last bit of mail I got from Sprint. |

I'm a sprint customer - on a family plan, with two lines (one for me, one for my wife). We have no other phone - only these cell phones. I've never had an incorrect bill, never had a dropped call, never had a single problem with anything at all. Everything works just fine, always has. I guess I'm in the minority, but I'm a satisfied Sprint customer. |

Some people dont have issues with things, I ahd tmobile and the county i lived in never had a problem worked in buildings that verizon didnt. Everyone talks their service down but i had a pda phone very happy with the speed and service.
When i moved to the eastern shore Verizon only worked in my area, every other service had a 1.5 mile gap around my house. SO thats the only reason I switched. |

lol..... I did the same thing I even called the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and they asked me to send them a letter about all the problems I had with them. I could not get anybody to talk to me they kept giving me the run around on the phone. Soon as I called BBB and sent them a letter of my problems dealing with sprint would you believe sprint called me right away after the BBB got on them. They were so nice and offered me to stay, but I cancelled anyway I was so mad that it took me to do this to get someone to talk too. Even after I cancelled they still offered or sent me discounts to come back to them.
I cant see how they have the nerve to just cut customers off because they call or continue to call because of their crappy customer service or billing mistakes. I just still cant believe that they can do this and are doing it.

Well, let me tell you what has happened to me with Sprint just today. Back in 2004, I lost my job. I was unable to make my Sprint bill, and my phone got shut off. As soon as I was able, I paid the past due amount AND the $150 early termination fee because I knew that I would eventually want to go back to Sprint.
In June 2005, I opened a new account with Sprint and haven't missed a payment since then. As far as I can see, I am a model customer. Sprint sends me crap in the mail all the time telling me what a great customer I am and offering me "special deals."
Today, I got a phone call on my SPRINT CELL PHONE from a collection agency saying they wanted to talk to me about my past due SPRINT bill. I said, "What are you talking about? My Sprint bill is current." They're claiming that I owe money on the account I closed in 2004!!!! I told the collection agent that that is not possible since he was talking to me on my Sprint phone, and Sprint wouldn't have let me have a new account if I still owed on the old one. He asked me if I could prove I paid off the old account, and I said, "Do you keep your cell phone bills going back three years? I was seriously underemployed at the time and paying everything in cash lest I accidently bounce a check." He conceded that he doesn't keep his bills going back that far either. I again pointed out to him that he was calling me on a Sprint cell phone, which I would not have if I owed Sprint money. He said that it must be a mistake and apologized.
I went to my local Sprint store to see if they could bring up the information from when I paid off the account back in 2004. They can't bring up anything beyond the first of this year, but said there was $5 showing due on the account. They said they were confused because I should NOT have been able to open a new Sprint account if I still owed on the old one. They said they can't even complete a credit check if there is a past due amount owed to Sprint attached to your social security number. But, eventhough I KNEW it was bull, I paid the $5.
Then, I called customer service, and they claimed I owed a much higher amount. I asked if I supposedly owed all this money, how is it that I have a Sprint phone right now? They said it happens sometimes that they will allow you to open a second account when you still owe on another. I called them liars. I swore at them.... A LOT. And, I've called them 3 times today. I even asked them, how many custoemrs can they afford to lose? I was a good customer for two years before I lost my job, I have been a good customer for the over two years that I've been back.
I went and talked to my sister's cell phone provider, and they told me 8 out of 10 people coming through their door are coming from Sprint. They rarely see anyone from the other providers, except the occassional person switching from a local carrier. Everyone else is people who are getting first cell phones. Their service is more money than Sprint's, but I'm switching because I'm tired of the headache of dealing with Sprint. The only reason I did not switch today is because I didn't have enough money for the phone I want.
At the moment I'm busy drafting my complaint to both the Better Buisness Bureau AND The Federal Trade Commission.

My only problem with Sprint thus far is this.
I got a phone from them at the beginning of my contract (almost 2 years ago) and the phone began having problems in November. It would shut off in the middle of a call saying that the battery was dead, only to have 4 bars when you turn it back on. Also, when you put it on the charger from a totally "drained" battery, it would be fully charged in 5 minutes. Sprint looked at it, said they cant fix it, and gave me a new phone (same model) since I have the replacement plan. So everything is going smoothly with the new phone, until the SAME EXACT PROBLEMS started taking place. So I look online and it turns out a lot of the owners of those phones are experiencing the same problems. So I call Sprint saying I want a new phone, but not the same model, because I refuse to accept a product that is obviously dysfunctional. They tell me that they can only give me the same model again, but if I want to sign up for a new 2 year plan, they will give me $150 off a new phone. I yell, they hang up, I call back, they hang up, etc.
So finally I got them to panic, I asked them for a copy of my signed contract. The lady I was speaking with pointed me to another number. The guy on the phone there pointed me to another number. The guy on that number told me to go to the store - which I claimed got eaten up in the Sprint/Nextel merger. I then demanded that they provide me with my contract, or I want my account closed without any cost to me. The guy told me he could get it to me in a few months. I laughed at him, I said if you guys cant prove to me that I have a contract with you by providing it to me, then I want out of this now.
Then my cell phone died. |

Well, I've been reading up on this problem with Sprint, and apparently if you call them, and they transfer you multiple times, they count each transfer as an individual phone call. So, assuming they didn't count the four times I called them and got a message saying they couldn't process my call and please call back, they would say I called them twelve times today. In reality I called them three times, was hung up on, and bounced pillar to post.
I think I'll call them a few times next week to get up to my 40 calls a month quota. |

Why don't you call them and ask them how many times you have to call to get out of your contract? |

I seriously have to wonder if they're being flooded with calls from people who want out of their contract. I read somewhere that Sprint is trying to get bought out. By who, I don't know. |

I still won't sign one of those contracts. I have a pay-as-you-go plan. It's the industry secret in the US; they'll do anything to get you on a regular plan instead, with a contract.
I had Verizon pay-as-you-go for just $15/month minimum. You cumulate the minutes (it's great if you aren't a big cell phone talker). Unfortunately, they changed the plan so it cost much more than having a contract, since you had to pay a $1 a day access fee (as far as I could understand, every day whether you used the phone or not), so it was basically $30 a month, plus usage. Yuck. We have two phones grandfathered in the old $15 plan though. But when we needed more lines, we were forced to go with t-Mobile. I basically pay $107 per year TOTAL for 1000 minutes. That's more than I need, and no contract. The signal isn't as good as Verizon though :(
They will keep screwing people with contracts as long as they're willing to sign them. It's crazy. Good service/Bad service, it doesn't matter, because you have a contract you can't get out of. Why does the government allow this monopolistic and anticompetitive behavior?
Anyway, sorry for the rant, it just angers me. The article was funny. If I had a Sprint contract I wanted to get out of, I'd start calling customer service daily! |
Seems like people want to complain about the government until private industry causes a problem - then who do they call on? The government.

They're not, that was market speculation after Alltel was bought out.
The difference is, Sprint has a market price of over 40 Billion, where Alltel was around 20, I think.
Sprint Being bought would be the largest corporate buyout ever, by a huge margin.

Yes, but in the fourth quarter last year Sprint lost 300,000 customers. Then, in the first quarter another 220,000 left. Who knows what they lost in the 2nd quarter. Now, they're doing something unbelievable to most companies by dumping customers who ask too many questions or roam to much. They're just continuing the anger customers. The speculation is that they're trying to drive down their market price, so that they can be bought out. It's hard to be 3rd. |

I got an e-mail from the Better Buisness Bureau telling me that Sprint told them that they're too busy to respond to my complaint! No, I'm not kidding. They have until August 21 to respond to the complaint. What happens if they don't respond, I have no clue.
But, today I get a phone call from Sprint claiming that my account is seriously past due and they will cut off my phone if I don't make a payment today. I paid my bill two weeks ago. I have a receipt to prove it. So, I pressed buttons continuously until I got a human being on the phone who confirmed it was a mistake and to disregard the call. Is Sprint too busy to keep track of who pays their bills? This isn't even the first time this has happened! So, I filed another complaint with the BBB.
What is a top tier customer? I read in one of the articles about Sprint firing customers that they were concerned with keeping their top tier customers. I pay for two phones every month. We have more than just the basic plan. I pay extra for internet and both phones are insured. I might not be top tier but I'm not bottom tier either! I want Sprint to fire me, but I'm starting to think it might be worth $175 to get away from them. |

I've been a Sprint customer for a long time after having the WORST customer service (lack of) from AT&T. Sprint was really good up until a couple of years ago but with so many subscribers, I guess they are turning to sh*t like all of the other companies. I did have some problems with my son's phone and they were more than helpful though, so I'm not going to badmouth them totally. |

I work for another cell company and i can tell you that you are nowhere near a top tier customer. you would be amazed at what some people spend. in most of our markets the top 5% spend 25% of our monthly revenue and that is not business customers. |

wow thats the same exact thing that happened to me but I called and spoke to the BBB and they were really helpful and asked me to write up a letter and then to fax it to them and after that like 2 days later sprint called me and was so nice and helpful but I said screw it and still cancelled my account anyway with them and I have been happy ever since. I could not believe that it took me to call the BBB for someone to see that I made the payment and also just for me to speak to someone nice from sprint but again I was so mad and fed up with them I just cancelled my account

My only fear about leaving Sprint is either having to put down a deposit (Verizon and AT&T) or going to a provider with less than wonderful coverage (Alltel). As bad as Sprint's Customer (I don't)Care is, they do have really good coverage around here, and pretty much every where I need to be. I was looking at somebody's Alltel phone last night and it was on digital roam, right smack in the middle of town.
This lovely news article just explains so much about Sprint: Sprint Customer Care Rep Sends Death Threats to Customer. Sprint Terminates Customer.
Oh and this one is pretty good too. It seems to me that everytime I read about the "Customer Terminations" the bad customers were calling 30-40 times a month. Then it was 40-50 times a month. Now, they're saying these people called hundreds of times a month. Sprint Lies Like a Rug Okay, just KNOWING how long a single phone call to Sprint can take, I refuse to believe anyone called them hundreds of times in a month. There aren't enough hours in a month.
