Any thoughts/comments on filters?

Specifically:

Canon
Hoya
Tiffen

Filters can be thought of as lenses. There are cheap ones and expensive ones.

When you use a filter, you are adding another piece of glass (or plastic in some cases) to the front of your lens. Cheap glass/plastic is just that. More expensive filters have coatings that reduce glare/reflectivity and are made of higher quality 'clear' glass.

I'm a big fan of the Hoya multi-coated filters. There are only three types of filters that I use though. I have a couple of UV filters that I keep on my espensive lenses, a set of neutral density filters, and a circular polarizer.

I remember reading somewhere that Canon-filters are rebranded Hoya-filters but ofcourse... I can't find where I've read it.

Anyway, I've always been satisfied with Hoya. As well as Tiffen. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

John, what brand do you recommend?

Erik, thanks.

The brand you choose isn't that important. Just make sure you are buying a glass multi-coated filter. Hoya and Tiffen both make them.
