National Geographic Senior Photo Editor

Summary of Position:

The senior photo editor is responsible for all aspects of image acquisition for National Geographic Digital Media (NGDM) web projects. Develop editorial vision for imagery with the project development teams. Enforce NG standards for the use of exceptional imagery for NGDM web projects in order to protect and further enhance the NG brand. Research, edit, acquire, size, and write captions for photographs for NGDM web projects, approximately 5,000-10,000 images per year. Photo Editor is responsible for supporting NGDM rights clearance procedures, providing back-up for Editorial Services Managing Editor, consulting with image vendors, maintaining list of freelancers, writing and storing freelance contracts, etc.

Responsibilities:

- Image Consultant: Provide editorial vision for NGDM web projects as it applies to images. Consult with project development teams regarding their images needs for new projects, brainstorm, set deadlines, provide cost estimates, enforce NG standards for the use of images.

- NGDM Photo Research & Editing: Research, Acquire, Edit images for NGDMテ「冱 GeoCores, Advertising Projects, Business Development projects, etc. Track and submit rights clearance information for acquired photos.

- Rights Clearance Support: Maintain and create relationships with existing and new image vendors assuring that NGDM is getting the best possible rates and rights for our business needs. Make sure that NGDM staff are following proper NGS rights clearance policies.

- Supervise at least two direct reports as well as maintain a list of freelance photo researchers and handle contract negotiations with freelancers on an as needed basis.

- Provide back-up to Editorial Services Managing Editor as needed.

Minimum Education & Experience:

Bachelorテ「冱 degree in Visual Communications, Photo Journalism, or related field. 5-10 years experience working in the photo industry.

Knowledge & Skills Requirements:

Working knowledge of Photoshop. Excellent knowledge of intellectual property rights, personal property rights, and copyright law. Knowledge of the stock image industry, including rates. A strong grasp of content areas relevant to National Geographic is preferred.

Army Times Publishing Co., a Gannett company, seeks a photographer to produce informative, interesting images to help the reader more fully understand the subject matter and tell the story. This includes news coverage on Capitol Hill, the Pentagon, and the White House, as well as extensive domestic and international travel. Some assignments include difficult, austere, and potentially dangerous working/living conditions.

Photography responsibilities include the transmitting, captioning and digital processing of images for our print publications and their online components.
