By your request you had a good listing, not just any but 5th (on Google) under several great keywords..... Your traffic average was so high your webmaster had to call and advise you that shared hosting was no longer an option without having time outs. You now need a dedicated server..... Mad or glad. My client got mad.... am I missing something?

Strange but true... success pisses some people off.

I'm guessing this person's website doesn't generate income for them, so being forced to upgrade to a more expensive service would be a little upsetting. On the other hand they created the site for people to see and the more people that see it the happier they should be, right? I think they probably have a good reason to be a little bummed (having to shell out more cash), but not upset at you for doing your job too well.

You could fix their problem by making the website look like crap. That will potentially reduce traffic enough to keep the shared hosting without timeouts.

If the website was not generating any revenue, clients or in some way contributing to the business enough to justify the expense, then yeah, I'd be pissed too.

I would definitely be glad and try to catch some more Ads for the front page instead of getting mad at you. If he has such a great traffic, ads should able to cover his budget to upgrade IMO.

They do sell adds, 350 a year..... and they limit who. It has such potential for making good $$ with it, but just don't grasp it I guess. I am working on how to get them lower in google and splitting the domain and message board on to different servers. I tell ya what, never in my life did I think I would be working on lowering hits. I am suddenly thinking I will sponsor some races, and advertise my little site on theirs. I wouldn't mind the hits lol.

Where is the traffic coming in to the site? How much of it is good traffic and how much of it is 'bot traffic? I'd try telling the 'bots not to crawl the message boards first. That seems like a real easy way to cut a lot of traffic.

I can take his domain over, and give one of mine if it's to much traffic... and I start selling stuff there, and make money...

Deal?

I've actually had several clients that we work with where their local business is VERY well established and they don't have the time or resources yet to focus on any e-commerce at all. Also, they don't want to overload their own site, which is essentially there for their local clients, with advertising.

We didn't try to lower their keywords, we just closed off large sections of their site to web spiders and that's solved the issue each time so far.

Web spiders are programs that "crawl" the web and record what they find for search engines. They basically scan a page, then go to all of the links on that page, then repeat as nauseam. They make up a HUGE part of the web's traffic. Also, now that many more search companies are springing up, it's becoming a real problem for web hosting companies and their clients.

They're also called "bots", and "web crawlers."
