Dude thanks for finding this! It works perfectly for a website I took over on a volunteer basis. They are a non-profit so free and easy fit the bill!

In one day I have taken them from This (Old) to This (New).

I am of course still working on it but what a great piece of software! Long Live the GPL!

BTW, I don't know if you've tried to login from the front end of the site yet, but if ya do, with admin privileges, you can submit stories, etc. A nice feature for a site you can turn over to a customer. Let them add content, but keep 'em out of the backend where they could cause you grief.

Thanks for starting this thread, Leroy.

I am a Web hack, but I've been looking to build a more professional looking web page so that I might be able to do some work for the local papers (my current straight forward Coppermine gallery, sorely outdated since I started to build my portfolio here on DPC, is here: //photography.heverly.org/photography/). I also want somewhere where I can load stuff and point to it in a more professional capacity from my other life (I don't care to point too many people here, as I don't necessarily want people reading all my forum posts unless they're willing to google me).

My web host has Joomla as an easy install in my web space, so I'm going to install it and have a poke around, using some of the links from this thread. If I can't figure it out, I'll do some HTML, but I hope I can figure it out and make something easier to update and work with.

Thanks for keeping the thread going and not just stopping after you got your answer.

Best,

Rob

Rob, I've used the Serendipity Blog package a few times before and it was incredibly easy to work with. Not quite as customizable though.

Yeah gallery works with most CMS's and its heavily customizable. I decided to just go with pro smugmug and use my joomla for the site. I got the template up, at //www.weeast.com. Its still not complete, and I'll be changing some things and adding things of course.

After a few days of evaluation on some of these CMS packages, I have decided to stick with WordPress. There are a couple of good gallery plugins for WordPress, or it would be easy enough to integrate a Coppermine gallery as well. Since I use Flickr as an online storage repository, I found a great plugin that uses the Flickr API to display my selection of contents on my site. Since blogging is a huge majority of the content that goes on my site (besides photos), I think the WordPress system will work best for me...

I installed a plugin called Flickr Photo Gallery. I really love the way it handles my images. I can pick and choose flickr content to be displayed. It also provides a slideshow view...

Hi again, guys (I think we're all guys here in this discussion, aren't we?),

Okay, I've been reading the Joomla user's manual after installing Joomla and getting it going on my web server (not doing more than installing, checking the default page and opening the admin pages to have a poke around).

I think I don't need CMS :/ I don't expect to have half, or even a quarter, of the things they talk about in the manual. No calendars, blog entries, text updates. No users will have access other than me, and no one will add content to my site other than me. All I want is a place to show some shots and point people to that looks professional (cool would be nice, so maybe flash is it).

So, do I need cms, or do I need something else (and should I start another thread to figure out what)?

Hmph.

Thanks,

Rob

You can insert flash, photos, or whatever you want into the CMS. Just remember if you do a complete site in flash, no matter how good it looks, the search engine bots can't read text imbedded inside flash, so you're essentially putting yourself at the end of the search engine, and letting every other competitor show up sooner than you. Yes, flash looks good, but its a bad way to go as far as putting yourself out there.

I feel so stupid when it comes to web design and development no matter if it̢۪s a CMS such a Joomla, Momba, etc. or building from scratch. I have had a web host since February of this year with over 250 GB of storage and 2.4 TB of bandwidth that comes with WordPress, phpBB, Advanced Poll, ZenCart, MediaWiki, Joomla, Gallery, WebCalendar, 7000 email address, unlimited subdomains, unlimited MySQL databases, and so much more. Every time I try to work on something I have to attention span of a rock and been so depressed about it over the last few months. I want a website so bad, personal or public, I can taste it. I have ideas but I can̢۪t follow though with them. I even have video tutorial on php/mysql, dreamweaver, and many more web applications. But still can̢۪t do it. Feels like my IQ has dropped below my DPC score.

Don't feel bad, I can crank out sites for others without hesitation, and get inspired easy, but as soon as I have to work on my own... I get over critical, and takes me forever to get it done, even though I know what I'm doing. Designing your own site is probably one of the hardest things to do.

You might want to start out with something like WordPress. It's not difficult AT ALL to set up. It's even easier to administer.

Ok I installed WordPress and I will start working with it. Thanks for the advice and hopefully I will be able to make something good come out of the site.
